Cannot see menu text & Menu resolution issue

Post by realalec »

Hi all,

Here's the issue I'm having: In the game options, I have my monitor's resolution selected (1680x1050x32 @59), but the game only displays in low resolution (600x400 or something. Not sure). Both the menu and the 3d resolution are stuck at way below what I've set, and no change to the in game settings seems to have any effect.

More alarmingly, the key mapping menu is all messed up. All entries in the menu, except for ARTODNLEFT through AROTUPRIGHT appear blank. When I click on the column, the game polls for input, and does read the key I press, but it then applies that key to AROTUPRIGHT, no matter what control I've clicked. Also, the only text which will appear under the keys column at all appears to be the numbers 1-9 and 'Esc', despite my pressing other keys (e.g. 'n', 't', 'Enter', etc.).

One potential clue is that windows pops up a message that reads "The color scheme has bee changed to Windows 7 Basic" every time I load the game. Is that normal behavior? (I've attached a picture)

Here's what I've tried:
Unchecked the 'Use Desktop Resolution' box,
Checked 'Disable desktop composition'
Run program as administrator

Might be worth noting that this is a very clean install. This was even one of the first programs I installed after reformatting my computer. My next step is to re-download the game, in case I got a corrupt file, but it seems unlikely.

My Specs:
Windows 7 x64
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz
GeForce 9800 GTX+, 500MB
8GB RAM

Re: Cannot see menu text & Menu resolution issue

Post by stickman »

One potential clue is that windows pops up a message that reads "The color scheme has bee changed to Windows 7 Basic" every time I load the game. Is that normal behavior? (I've attached a picture)
It is normal for me, and never caused problems for 2 or 3 years.
Here's what I've tried:
Unchecked the 'Use Desktop Resolution' box,
Checked 'Disable desktop composition'
Run program as administrator
Here is how I have long set Compatibility in the BoBII .exe Properties:

Image

Do you have the latest DirectX 9.0c installed? BoBII needs this to run.
This will not replace DirectX 10 or 11.

DirectX9.0c here:

Thanks for the reply. I had installed DirectX 9.0c, though to be sure, I did it again. I also set up the compatibility tab as you suggested, to no avail. I'll try a fresh download and install soon.

Happy to see that there's still such active support for this old game! I'm looking forward to getting it working...!

What is the base BoB2 you've installed your patch over,
and where did it come from? You're the second person
who has this odd "Windows 7 basic colour" message lately,
and I'm wondering what it is coming from, maybe a wonky
base version? I'm baffled.

I downloaded the game from the A2A website here: http://www.a2asimulations.com/store/ind ... ucts_id=18 (or, rather, bought it from that site, then was provided a download link after purchasing it.)

Seems like the color issue never affected stickman, for what that's worth. Maybe I should also note that many keyboard shortcuts seem to work in the game, and I can play it, just in 1024x768 resolution only (no matter what is selected in the game options). Is there any reason Windows might not be receiving the instructions from the game as to what resolution to run it in?

Anyway, thanks again for your help!

Alright, this must be a local machine issue, of some sort.
I have W7/64 and I've never seen it. However, I do not use
the "aero" unnecessary display transparency nonsense, and
I have five OS updates that I have never installed, as they
are described as being intended for making IE10 or 11 work
better, and as I never use a µ$ browser, I saw no reason to
load them. Perhaps the message is due to one of those items.

I'm puzzled about your monitor's native resolution,
@59HZ. That's an odd number. We have seen BoB2
kick down to 640x480 resolution when it can't render
the selected resolution, due to either the card or the
monitor actually not being able to accept it. However,
I take it you are getting this 1680x1050x32 @59Hz OK
as your usual desktop resolution? Are their other sizes
you can try?

Thanks for the help. I've been playing with different combinations of desktop resolution and game resolution to see if that has any effect. It doesn't seem to. Nor does disabling aero settings, though setting the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic does get rid of that annoying message upon loading the game.

I'll also note, as I may not have previously, that the opening game menu is also a bit wonky. The 'Continue' button at the top of the screen in the options menu is cut off, such that I can only see the first few letters. My intuition is that it's not formatting correctly for a wide screen monitor, but I don't know. The button itself still functions, but maybe the strange menu resolution is also a symptom of the same underlying cause.

I'm willing to concede that it might just be some quirk of my hardware, but I'll also note that I am able to play just about every other flight sim (e.g. IL-2 1946, Rise of Flight, DCS, etc.) without much trouble, except where my CPU & GPU just aren't fast enough. Still, no resolution issues that I'm aware of.

Thanks again for your continued support!

Oh, ok, I see what this Windows 7 Basic is coming from (but not why) -
I have my desktop using the simplest "classic" look available, and it seems
to be called "windows 7 basic", but I don't know why that should have
anything to do with colours, or how the sim could have any influence
on things outside its borders. Still seems deeply suspicious to me,
especially as I've never heard it mentioned before.

This is usually the result of someone using a setting other than standard
96dpi for text character size, in the display settings. It shouldn't happen
otherwise.

You know what just occurred to me? I recently downgraded (upgraded?) from Windows 8.1 to Windows 7. Prior to that, I'd tried to run BOBII and, with some effort, got it to look much the same as it does on my machine now. At the time I figured it was because the game doesn't run on Windows 8. Perhaps, though this is evidence that the root cause is my hardware.

It was worth a shot though.

In fact, the game doesn't run on Win 8; well, it
runs, but crashes within a minute or so with a
"D3D9" error. However, before it crashes, it runs
and looks fine with full performance and resolution.
