Getting BoB2 v2.12 to run

Post by PV »

cyclonobby wrote:It's unfortunate but I have had 3 pcs over the last 7 years and never been able to load this game to my frustration. I was hoping with the latest update 2.12 I might succeed using a Windows 7 PC 64bit with 8 GB of Ram and over 200gb of hard disk space and an NVidia Card. The update has been loaded, the machine restarted and the game attempted to be loaded as an administrator as well as normally. I have tried to change the resolution down to lower just incase still with no joy.

I'm never sure whether I should or should not use FFDShow in the startup screen, so tried both, still with no joy.

Also when I do get the game to load I now get a fatal error that I have never seen before.
Fatal Error:
Failed to Find Requested Curve COMM1.0_2927 TailCIFatal Error:
Failed to Find Requested Curve COMM1.0_2927 TailCIFatal Error:
Failed to Find Requested Curve COMM FinCI

When I start either a training mission or full mission the screen goes blank and I never see anything and I guess the program crashes. I have been patient and left it for 5+ minutes incase it takes time to load settings on a first run.
When I do force the program to close I get the message "Battle of britain text is not responding"

I get to the initial screens but never into the game itself - be it training or mission status? Is there something i am missing?

I would dearly love to get this game going even once to see how good it really is.
Your pc sounds like it ought to manage quite well with BoB2, so
we should be able to figure out the problem. First, can you be
more specific about the nVidia card you have - the exact model
and RAM size? And I guess CPU as well, while we're at it. You can
use the DXDiag procedure as noted in my post here if you like:
http://www.a2asimulations.com/forum/vie ... 7&p=287877

OK, let's first go over what you've done in the way of preparations
as per the release notes for v2.12:

- Do not use any compatibility mode, run BoB2 "natively" in Win7
- you must have a current (newer than 2011) version of DirectX 9 installed
. on your machine in addition to any Dx10 and/or Dx11 you may have
- in the launch shortcut properties, under compatibility, disable "desktop composition",
. and set "run as administrator"

(I have no idea what this FFDShow thing you mention is.)

If you have a wide screen monitor, the
"Use Windows Desktop Resolution (recommended)" setting
is no longer recommended, it only applied to 3x4 aspect ratio monitors,
and is now badly out of date. Thus, set that to OFF, and select your
resolution from the options in the lines which then appear below, which
will probably be something like 1080x1920 @32bit.

That should be all you need to have it work. Let me know if
any of this is unclear, or if you believe you've already done
all this.

Re: Getting BoB2 v2.12 to run

Post by PV »

OK, the DXDiag output confirms my impression above,
you should be having absolutely no problems running
BoB2. Now let's address the other items I noted:

First, I see your monitor is a 3x4 (non-widescreen) device.
The advice about the Options>GFX> display screen settings
are then not as critical, but probably a good idea anyway:

Set "Use Windows Desktop Resolution (recommended)" to OFF, and
select your resolution from the options in the lines which then appear
below, choosing the native resolution for your monitor which should
appear as 1200x1600x32@60Hz

Next, can you confirm the status of each of these points:

1) Do not use any compatibility mode, run BoB2 "natively" in Win7

Yes?

2) you must have a current (newer than 2011) version of DirectX 9 installed
. on your machine in addition to any Dx10 and/or Dx11 you may have

To quote Stickman:

You need the latest DirectX 9.0c to run BoBII. You will still have DirectX 11 after doing so.
You do not need to uninstall and reinstall BoBII. Just download DirectX 9.0c and install it.
You can find it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

Done?

3) in the BoB2 launch shortcut properties, under compatibility, disable "desktop composition",
. and set "run as administrator"

As I say, doing all this ought to result in a working install.
If not, we'll have to dig deeper. Perhaps an issue with the
original BoB2 install; it may be necessary to uninstall and
reinstall (what patch level was the original install, what
did the opening screen look like); we'll look at all that if
necessary after I hear back on the three items above.

Okay I'm getting somewhere. I have loaded Directx 9.0c full redist. The first time I ran the programme I got to the landing screen and got through to instant action. I used a few of the controls, all seemed well. I came out of the program completely (quit to pc desktop) and then went back in got to the landing screens and beyond that the screen goes blank, I force quit the program and get the "battle of britain text not responding" message again :(

I will look at the original install disk from the box (c 2005) and give you more information. Please let me know what you need - thanks

Good to hear we're getting somewhere.
Not sure what you mean by "landing screens".
You currently are running v2.12, over a 2005 box edition,
yes? With a current DX9.0c, that should be all you need.

If I understand you, you managed to get the 3D to come up,
on an Instant Action mission, yes? The basic takeoff training,
or something else? Were you able to get a plane in the air,
and fly about for a bit? In the second IA subsection is a
choice called "Free Flight", which starts in midair. It is a
good place to start for initial test purposes, as you don't have
to manage a successful takeoff.

If you are able to get that far, and not have a ctd within the
first couple of minutes, it indicates your PC will have all its necessary
bits and be behaving.

If you get a crash, with a "not responding" message, we then need to
look at what sort of crashlog message you get. It may indicate interference
from an antivirus program. Norton/Symantec has been bad for this.
We have not been seeing crashes due to BoB2 for a long time, so
these crashes are usually due to some interference from the PC.

The information necessary for diagnosing a crash resides in the crashlog.txt
file which is written in the BoB2 root folder. This file gets appended with
every event, so the relevant parts for the most current problem are found at
the bottom. I believe the date is right for v2.12 in the line below; the relevant
part of the crashlog will be in the 25 or so lines below the last instance of this
line in the file:

------------ Begin of section written with bob.exe, Build/Rebuild all date: Dec 21 2012 17:39:32 ---------

Re: Getting BoB2 v2.12 to run

I have uninstalled everything, manually removed the folders also. I have reinstalled from scratch and restarted etc... I am now running v2.12 over a 2005 purchased version v2.0.8.0 with the latest Directx9.0c redist installed.

For your information I am using Comodo Internet Security - the free download version from their website. I have tried the "disable desktop composition" in compatibility - both ticked and unticked. I am running as an administrator. FFDShow does not appear anymore. I have also tried the game with Comodo antivirus switched off.

Apologies when i said the landing screen I meant the main screen with the big list of options and the background image i.e.: instant action, campaigns, options, quit etc..

I am still having trouble getting into the game itself beyond the IA Subsection even after all the attempts above - In the options menu I have tried both: 'Use windows desktop resolution (recommended)' - on and off.

I have looked for the crashlog.txt file in the bob folder and as a general drivewide search on the c: drive (where all my programs live) and in libraries documents etc.. I cannot seem to find a crashlog.txt file - is there another file that might be useful?

As a note I have since loaded the original 2005 disc plus overwriting v2.12 onto A windows Vista Business HP pavillion dv2700ea Laptop (Core 2 duo) with Nvidia Card and followed all your instructions and the program works fine and runs very well. I did this as a test to make sure it was not the original disc causing problems.

This is wracking my brains, especially not finding the crashlog.txt file

The crashlog.txt should be in your BOB root folder if the game has crashed. You should also get a debug.txt for everytime you run in 3D.
Set your file sort and group preferences to date and they should be right at the top.
I would think that no crashlog must mean that something external caused the problem?

Hope things can get sorted out best of luck.

This is more Buddye's domain, but I believe the absence of a
crashlog means the 3D never got properly started.

...We recently had a report of someone whose joystick software
was conflicting somehow, and causing reports that looked initially
like something to do with the video. You could try seeing if you can
get the 3D to run with no inputs such as joysticks or TrackIR, just
so we can get an idea where the problem might be.

...I looked up the "FFDShow" thing, and it seems to be some sort of
freeware aftermarket shim that slides in to the video handling to provide
video codecs. This sort of thing should be fully deactivated before
running BoB2, as who knows what sort of mischief it might be up to.

Success!!! - I removed the gamepads so it started up with the keyboard as default and went through to free flight running for 4 minutes with no problem.

I plugged my saitek p2500 back in and set it up but the programme crashed at the 3D screen again. I checked the gamepads settings and unticked the "rumble effects on" or "force feedback (FF tickbox) so they were off and bingo it works.

I also tried to use a saitek p2600 too, also working fine.

Just for your information the gamepads don't appear to work every time when you ask them too when switching in the options menu. I guess that might be a computer restart to enable the gamepad(s), but all in all a success to get it running.

Thanks to the team and individual inputs. I now look forward to learning how to play it properly.

Many Thanks :D

Good! :)

The last guy that had serious trouble getting BoBII to run, also found that it was an input problem, too. In his case originating from his Sidewinder joystick.
He cleared up the problem by himself too, with no real good and quick help from us.

These input problems were rare in BoBII in past years, but now we have two in a row, so we now can ask players to check their inputs
when they get serious problems.

Thanks for holding out in your desire to get BoBII running and your feedback and how you cleared it up.

Aloha!
