Can't run any res higher than 800x600

Post by Guy123 »

Hey all.

I'm a big sim fan and play DCS, Rise of Flight, FSX etc. - I really want to get into BOB as I've heard great things about the A2A community but I'm running into a little issue.

At the moment I can only run the game in 800x600 graphics mode, which is rather frustrating. I currently have two screens, one is 1920x1080 (main) and the second screen is 1600x900. I'm not really fussed about having use of the second screen while the game is running.

My problem is that - as per any widescreen, the game does not pick up my 'desktop resolution'. To get around this I do as I read on the forum and turn off 'detect desktop res' and select 1920x1080 (NOTE: the 1920x1080x32 resolutions have ! marks around them - does this signify anything?)

When I then load instant action to test, I am presented with a black screen, shortly after a mouse cursor appears in the middle and I am left in this situation until I quit to desktop.
Also worth noting is that when this happens it is evident that there is an inch thick black border running around the outer edge of the screen. When I ctrl+alt+del to get to task manager, it is as if the screen has shrunk!

My system specs:

AMD 8 core bulldozer CPU
64GB RAM
ATI Radeon 7870

Does anyone have any other ideas I could try?

Many thanks

Guy

Also, forgot to mention that I am running Windows 7 x64!

Thanks

I think you are saying you did the correct fix.

Please try again and here is the link:

When you try to run the game let it run after you hit fly and do not close it down (it may take a while to load.

Loading can be impacted by your virus software as it checks files when loading. See this link:

Hi: the "!" is not significant, it just means that resolution was not standard
back in 2005 when the GUI was written. Be sure you don't have any
"desktop composition" or "compatibility mode" associated with the BoB2
exe; it runs fine with plain vanilla W7/64.

The symptoms you describe are odd, it does sound as if something is
getting confused as the program tries to shift to 3D. This often involves
passing through an intermediate screen resolution before the target one
is set, but there is a splash screen (a seascape at dusk photo) that
appears and you can see the resizing, then a blue progress bar appears
in the middle and fills red from the left. If you aren't getting that far,
it isn't surprising that dropping to desktop results in a resolution change.

It sounds a little like the problem people have when trying to run the
sim with Win8.

Wait, are you saying that when you select 800x600 the 3D runs up OK?
That suggests a video driver issue. I run 1080x1920x32 on a ATI6850
with no issues, and we have lots of people running ati 6000 series,
but perhaps something has cropped up with the new series, though
I would have expected to hear about it before this.

Thanks for the replies chaps!

I don't have compatibility settings set for the game, and when it tries to load into the 3D world I do NOT get the nice dusk shot with the loading bar - instead just a black screen which results in presumably a crash (windows mouse icon is never a good isgn).

I'm not sure if this is relevant but my computer screen is connected to the graphics card via HDMI cable. Unlike with the DVI connection, when I connected via HDMI I also had the inch thick black border around the screen. In order to get around this I had to manually go into 'Catalyist control centre' and set the 'oversize' value to 100% in order to remove the border. When BOB tries to run in 3D mode it would appear that these changes are reversed (the black border returns!). - Do you think this is relevant?

Thanks for the replies guys!

Ah, don't know about the HDMI, my monitor was bought about
3 months before those came out for my model. Still curious about
the clarification, does 3D run if you select 800x600?

HI,

I'm so sorry, I thought it was running at 800x600 by default, turns out it only work at 640x480!

I've just switched it to 800x600 and it still does not work. :(

So you are saying that it will run up the 3D at 640 x 480?
Then this is absolutely a video card/driver/monitor issue.
It is possible that this is a driver error with the current
7800 series driver, but I suppose it could be in the negotiations
with the monitor as well. If the program can't successfully
negotiate a requested resolution, with the display system
(card, driver, monitor) it will drop to 640x480. Thus something
is telling the program a 1080x1920 resolution can't be done.

People see this happening with wide screen (16x9 or 16x10)
monitors if they leave "Use desktop resolution[recommended]="
set to "yes".

It only remains to determine what is causing it in your case, and
bypassing it. My first recommendation would be to try setting
your display settings to vanilla wherever possible - no expanded
character size, no enhanced features, then ask for 1080x1920
in BoB2 and see what happens. You may also want to check for
another driver (either older or newer) for your 7870, and try that.
