graphic card advice

Post by mptbowl »

Hi there
I'm thinking of upgrading my graphics card and have chosen a 'VTX Radeon HD 5450 2GB DDR 3 PCI Express Graphics Card - 3.8GB Hyper Memory' but before I buy it I thought I would run it pass the A2A community to see what somebody with a lot more expertise and experience thinks of this choice or even suggest something else. I'm getting a new card because I want to fully access the v2.12 update and so would appreciate any feedback.
cheers Michael

OK, looking at your previous thread http://www.a2asimulations.com/forum/vie ... 42#p261142
I see your previous card was an "NVIDIA Quadro FX 1400", which
I determined after much digging was " comparable to an nVidia Gf 6800".
So, now, looking at the Tom"s Hardware gfxcard chart http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gam ... 107-7.html,
we see that a "Radeon HD 5450" is placed on level 26 down from
the top, the same level as the nVidia 6600gt, and the Intel
integrated 3000. The latter is a truly dire card which could never
render any version of BoB2, and would probably struggle with
BoB1 from 2000. I would expect the 6600 would do a bit better,
but not as good as a 6800, which is one level up, and is equivalent
to your old card. Thus buying a 5450, according to Tom's, would
actually be a step backward for you.

Your machine is so old that you have to be careful about the
connection protocol, that is, what socket and speed any new
card would require to successfully mate with your machine.
Beyond that, you have to make a determination if you want
to acquire a card which will far outperform your machine's
level, but could be transferred to a newer machine in the future,
or if you just want a modest improvement and will simply
abandon the whole machine when you do your next upgrade.

However, with that in mind, I would still always recommend
trying to buy something much closer to the top of the chart.
My preference would be no lower than line 15, and I see when
you look at the beginning of the article for which the link above
is for page 7, you will find a page listing cards currently under $125US,
and the first entry, @ $65, places at line 14. If this proves to
be compatible with your machine (PCI version, etc), that is the
sort of ballpark I would start looking in.
