Problems with Battle of Britain wings of victory pc game

Post by karimkekhia »

Hi there!

I recently purchased a second hand copy of the bob wings of victory II pc game, and im having problems getting to play.

Its installed okay with no probs, I have the updated direct 9 installed and also I have updated the patch/game to 2.11.

However when I am in the menu and i have cliked onto 'fly', the sim tries to load but then I get a error box, that is stating 'microsoft has encountered a problem with battle of Britain English text, and needs to close'

The sim then crashes straight back to windows.

Pleeeaase help guys as I soooo want to play this sim, and it just will not work!

Many thanks people

Karim :D :D :D

We will need to check your PC spec first. Just post your DxDiag for us to review.

Here's how to create a DXDIAG:

DX Diag is a utility/report that dumps technical info to a text file. The file is fairly lengthy, and is divided into sections for easy management. The detail in this file may help us discover 'related issues' leading to the solution of problems users are having.

*Click on your "Start" button.
*Select "Run".
*Clear the "Open" box and type "dxdiag" (without the quotes).
*Click "OK".
*A box called "DirectX Diagnostic Tool" should open.
*At the bottom of this window, you will find a button called "Save All Information".
*Click this button.
*A box will pop up prompting you to save a file called "dxdiag.txt"
*Save this file to your "Desktop".
*Now you should see a text file called "dxdiag.txt" sitting on your Windows desktop.
*That's it!! Now we will have the info necessary to help you efficiently

Just cut and paste it into this thread and yes it is large.

Second, and this is "important, I assume you updated to 2.12 (and not 2.11 as you stated), did you review and implement all the 2.12 'Release notes'? Just read the text on the link where you downloaded the 2.12 to find the release notes.

Hi there!

Awwww wow your fantastic, thankyou soooo very much!! Okay my system is slightly old..its a dell optiyplex gx620, and I have plenty of memory there, as the game installed perfectly. I did also upload the latest direct 9 as well.

Please accept my apologies, I really am not computer savvy at all, so bear with me!! :-) hehe!!

Okey dokey, do you know how to post this info file on here? Im not so sure how to do this! I can get the file onto my desktop, as your instructions were fantastic on how to do this!

Ill get to work on this! May I say that a cliked on the part of that error box that comes up when I try to play the sim, and where it states..clik here to view details of the error that has occurred..and it shows a lot of pc technical error info.. there is some text on the .exe file of the game...but I may be reading that wrong, and that has nothing to do with the problem!!! By the way, yeah its 2.12 that I had uploaded..and I gather that it places a lot more scenery with airfields and London buildings, which is soooo tantalizing!

Ill be back asap!

Many thanks

Karim

Hi there!

I've tried to copy, paste and cut that file dxdiag document, from my desktop into this text box and nothing happens!! There is a section below where you can choose file, and I've tried that, and it wont allow it!

I'm really sorry, I have never cut and pasted documents into forums before!!

Can you help at all?

Many thanks

If you are viewing the file with notepad, go Edit>SelectAll, then Copy,
while you have the A2A forum open in a browser window, with a post
in this thread open to compose. In this compose window, right click
and select paste, and the contents of the file should dump into the
text window. All done.

Re: Problems with Battle of Britain wings of victory pc game

Post by Buddye »

Your PC has the following inboard graphic capability: Card name: Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family. BOBII has never run without any issues with a inboard graphic card. See the following link:

http://a2asimulations.com/forum/viewtop ... 17&t=12174

This in board graphic capability will not work with BOBII. BOBII requires a outboard video card with at least 1 GB of memory. Also you Processor is a Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs).

In your case a new gamer PC is your best option (A Dual or Quad core processor with a good out board graphic card) as your current PC is too old and out dated for running a current Combat Flight Simulator like BOBII. You could try and purchase a new video card for your current PC but with your current processor I do not think you would be happy with BOBII's performance.

I am sorry for the bad news but we do try and post PC warnings on the Technical Forum's Sticky Threads which are above.

Hi
I have just purchased BoB2 Wings of Victory & successfully loaded it & played it on my new HP computer. I Have to say that I am not very computer savvy!
I saw the fabulous updates via the A2A web site & am obviously very impressed & must have them on my machine! I see that the download on offer is V2.11 but I see from the Forum that v2.12 is available so I would like that but I am not sure where I download it from.
Before I get that far I have a problem when I tried to load v.2.11 from the A2A website. I loaded the www.gamershell.com/download_59140.shtml. But didn’t download the MULTISKIN. The download seemed to go ok & when I started the game it went thru the initial sequences ok & looked normal up to the stage where having chosen a game when it got to the screen which normally shows the weather & landscape being configured with the small red box in the middle. The picture was blurred & the red box was much larger than normal & the text didn’t come up just blurred lines. Eventually it got into the game (basic take-offs) but the screen was pixilated with jagged edges to lines & no text except meaningless lines etc! The plane reacted to the joy stick ok but the picture was terrible & without graphics indicting heading, airspeed etc.
I have tried uninstalling & reloading about 6/7 times but each time it crashed the system at the point where the weather & landscape was trying to load. I didn't manage to get into the game again! On retry following this it came up with numerous error messages saying system didn't close properly & 'don't know this variable in bdg.txt. So the reloads were without success & have now given up & gone back to the ‘old’ system! I am desperate to get the latest version working as it looks so good but need help! I am only very basic with the computer so if it’s complicated will get one of the IT guys at work to help me.
I guess that the problem may lie with my graphics set up – the computer has the following video card (I think!):
Processor Intel(R) Core â„¢ i5 -3470 CPU @3.20GHz
Memory 4.00 GB
System Type 64 bit Operating System
Intel® HD Graphics 2500
Total Graphics Memory 1696MB
Vid Memory 64MB
System Memory 0MB
Shared System Memory 1632MB
I am running on Windows 7 & having just had a trawl though some of the threads on the forum I see that you ask for DxDiag details so I have placed them below!!
I would appreciate it if anyone could give me any advice on what the problem is & how to cure it & how to get to v.12 Download please as I am really anxious to get immersed in the latest version which looks terrific!!?

Re: Problems with Battle of Britain wings of victory pc game

Post by PV »

Hi madmax, and welcome!

Yes, I except your suspicions regarding your graphics card
are correct. Your machine otherwise looks like it should have
little trouble coping with BoB2, but we have very rarely seen
anyone with the most top end Intel graphics able to run BoB2,
or any other contemporary combat sim. Unfortunately Intel
has chosen to do as AMD/ATI have been doing lately, and
be somewhat coy about the exact graphics model revealed
in the DXDiag printout, but we see that it is one of the Intel HD
chipsets. (edit: oh, sorry, I missed where you noted it was
a 2500; OK) If you look here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gam ... 107-7.html
you'll see a hierarchy chart of video card performance, with
entries going back at least a decade. I recommend a card
found within the top ten or so tiers in the chart in order to
run the current patch level of BoB2 well. This represents cards
of mid to upper gamer level (which is essentially top level of
cards in general) produced over the past three or four years.
By knocking back some settings, you can run comfortably with
a card in the top 14 or 15 tiers. You will note that the top of
the line Intel HD chip, the 4000, appears on that list at the
22nd tier, across from flagship ATI and nVidia cards from around
2005, and mid level gamer cards from around 2007. Your
HD 2500 presumably languishes somewhere around tier 27 or so.
It is entirely possible that it will be too weak to run BoB2 at all,
which is what we have usually found with Intel chipsets.

This article at Tom's Hardware, which is a constant feature and
has been updated regularly every couple of months since at
least 2005 or so, is also useful as a quick guide to what you
might expect to pay to upgrade to a better position on the chart.
Just pull up the other pages from the drop down menu at the top.
You will note that a $65 card ought to put you on tier 15 and $110
will put you at tier 10. Small subsequent increments will get you
further up, which will give you some futureproofing as well as putting
you in a position to handle other modern graphic intensive sims
and games. It's up to you where to target, but I generally don't
consider the top couple of tiers as there is a bit of a premium
for the top spaces, and those cards will always be displaced in
a few months by the next hotshot, with a resulting improvement
in their pricing.

If you do an upgrade, please be aware that you need to ensure
that 1) the card you get is compatible with your monitor and your
motherboard (this is less of a problem these days than it has been
in the past, but still needs attention) and 2) you will have sufficient
wattage in your power supply to handle the increased load of
the graphics card under full 3D rendering usage. You will note that
the Tom's article thoughtfully includes a recommendation for power
supply wattage for the cards it features.

Another note, please beware of relying on retail staff in selecting
a card. One of the chief reasons for the existence of the chart is
the naming (= numbering) conventions of the manufacturers, which
give retailers the opportunity to sell a card with a similar number,
but much lower performance, by dismissing the difference in the
labelling. In recent years, there has been a relabelling trend, where
leftover cards from a previous tech generation have been repainted
with the leading numerals of a newer series to give the impression
of more modern technology. And as you can see from the chart, all
those annoying prefixes and suffixes all count as to where a card
fits. Why they can't just say "2012 year, top model", "2013 year,
third best", seems to be all about allowing the marketers the chance
to screw the unwary.

two mirrors for each, and a choice of English or International for the
patch, plus a separate Multiskin.

The release notes, currently only found in that post, are useful to read,
containing lots of relatively important stuff, but we'll need to get you
running first.

When first configuring the sim for your PC, You need to make a few
adjustments to the Options>GFX page, which in our next patch we
(at least I fervently hope) will have a better text in the instructions
there. The "Use Windows Desktop Resolution (recommended)" setting
is no longer recommended, it only applied to 3x4 aspect ratio monitors,
and is now badly out of date. Thus, set that to OFF, and select your
resolution in the lines below, which (as per your DXDiag) will be
1080x1920 @32bit. This should fix the 3D display resolution, when
you are able to run the 3D.

The "Don't know this variable" messages occur normally, only once,
when a new patch is first used, as some bdg.txt variables have been
discarded over the years and many new ones introduced. Nothing to
worry about.

Against our trepidations, it was decided with v2.10 to go with highest
resolution landscape tiles as the default, and as these can only be
adjusted in the bdg.txt file, it has caused trouble over the years for
those with weaker graphics cards. This is one of the major notes of
importance in the Release Notes. The setting is
LANDSCAPE_TEXTURE_SIZE = 2048
which you find by searching the bdg.txt file in the BoB2 root folder
using the "find" function while reading the file with Notepad. For
a weaker card, this value should be set to 1024 (or even 512).
This can make the difference to a card running the sim or crashing.

OK, that's probably enough for one post. It'll give you quite a bit to digest.

Hi PV
Following your previous advice re my computer capacity I am sorting an upgraded graphics card etc. In the meantime I am successfully using my 'standard' BoB VoV prog on the computer. the only problem I am experiencing is with the sound! The sound comes through my headphones OK on starting the programme during the preamble but when the game actually loads there is no sound - I guess that I should be hearing the engine, tower & general chatter I I think that I have it all switched on but no sound!
Any ideas please?

Well, it's a bit of a puzzler: looking at your DXDiag output above,
it seems to indicate you don't have any sound hardware at all
(see under "Sound Devices"). This makes me wonder how you
can hear anything at all with your phones. I suspect, though,
that it may be that you have onboard sound, but the sound
drivers have never been loaded. Ah, right the DxDiag Notes
section says

Sound Tab 1: No sound card was found. If one is expected, you should install a sound driver provided by the hardware manufacturer.

This would be some software that should come on a driver disc for
your motherboard. You would go to
Control Panel>Device Manager>Sound, video and game controllers,
and I think perhaps right click on any entry you see under there,
and select properties. That ought to give you a window with a
"Driver" menu tab, and you could then select install driver, and point
it to the mobo driver software cd, where it would find the sound
drivers. That may not be the exact process, but it should be
something similar (I don't have a machine with no sound drivers
installed to see what the windows look like in that condition).
If it is not quite as I describe, you might have to flail about a bit,
but it should be fairly straightforward, assuming of course that
you have your driver disc. If not, you may have to go on the web
and seek out your MoBo manufacturer's website and d/l the drivers
from there.

Thanks PV
It was stupid of me - its a brand new machine & I assumed that the sound was fully installed which patently it isn't!
PS I have just downloaded the RAF maps which are great - I don't suppose you know what size they have to be printed out so that the print is to original scale do you?

Nope, I don't have those maps. I do have one of a part of France,
from the same guys (RAF), and it has a legend that states it is 1 to
1,000,000 ie 1mm=1km, and it has a scale showing 10 1km gradations,
which I zoomed on, and found it was 123 pixels. so to get that one
to print at the right scale, it would have to be printing 12.3 pixels per
mm. You should be able to do something similar, but have never tried
to get a page to print at a specific scale, so I don't know how well it
will work. It would seem that to do a really nice job of it you'd want
to get them printed on a big drafting-sized page, as it is that sort of
original dimension, but I believe people have chopped them up in an
image editor and printed them in sections, then taped them together.
