I need help with programming my joystick

Post by mptbowl »

Hi there I have just started playing BOB wings of victory2. Now then I did a post a while ago asking for help with my microsoft sidewinder stick and Budeye kindly replied but I was no where near my computer so I am starting again so bear with me.
Firstly I had problems with the sidewinder which was sometimes accepted by the game and sometimes didn't. I saw a cheap cyborg evo wireless stick and bought it. My problem now is trying to programme the buttons, even the thrust slider doesn't respond. I go to controls in the game where I can see that the stick has been accepted but when I go to custom it clearly shows that thrust and many other actions are being controlled by the keyboard. How do I change this? In the cyborg programmer it says y/x axis are programmed into the stick and indeed once off the ground they work but the thrust control which is also programmed in does not, so it is lying with the 'contols' section in the game.
I have other questions if you are patient but these are shorter the most important thing for me is getting started but if you have the patience I would like to know what are 'patches' I keep on hearing this mentioned and also when I go to contact us in the game I end up going to some Russian site that seems to have no relevance to the game at all.
Thanks for reading and look forward to any replies.
regards Michael

Best to start with the step by step in the manual p26 - 35,
and be aware that you have to set all the items to the
settings you want before leaving the controller page,
or else you must fully exit the sim for your first changes
to be written, before re-entering the page to add anything
further. Best to exit the sim immediately after configuration,
so you know you've got it saved. CTDs are very rare these
days, but why take the chance.

Hi PV I'm reading through the manual. I'm also going to try removing the whole game and start again. As I'm just starting I'm not losing anything. My new joystick has no problems with other flight games. I'm guessing what you mean by CTD's, is it 'crash to desktop'. I have had the game shutdown on me quite often. Like I said I'm new to this regards M

Ah, I see you are 1) asking about patches, and 2) getting crashes.
This would make sense. I don't know what version of BoB2 you
acquired, but we have been patching it for about 7 years now,
and the latest version should be pretty bulletproof. Old ones
not so much.

This post contains the links for the latest patch (update), v2.12 .
http://www.a2asimulations.com/forum/vie ... 10&t=33263
It will be a considerably heavier load for you machine than the
basic stock item, but also much improved. It will help if you can
outline the specs of your machine, so we can help you choose
settings that will allow your machine to run the sim well.

...You also mention programming joystick buttons. The key command
assignment system on the controller config page uses the terminology
A1_b1 for buttons, this meaning controller (stick) 1, button 1. If you have
a separate yoke or pedal block, that would be A2, and A2_B3 would be
its third button. There is also a A1_Fire entry for fire buttons.

Sorry it's late and I'm not explaining things well. I'll reappear when
I'm more awake. Meanwhile ask if anything isn't clear (which is likely).

Thankyou very much for your reply PV. I've been on it all morning, and to be honest I'm worn out by it. I wont hassle you now, I'll have a rest and try to be clear what I'm trying to achieve, I'll make a few notes as I go

Hi PV. I'm trying to get the info you need regarding system specs but as I bought this computer second hand I have to contact a few people to get it. I will get back to you as soon as I can

Ah, I see we've lost some of our stickies, in particular
the "before you ask for help" one. I'll try to get that
reposted. Meanwhile, this is all you need to provide
your machine specs:
Here's how to create a DXDIAG:

DX Diag is a utility/report that dumps technical info to a text file. The file is fairly lengthy, and is divided into sections for easy management. The detail in this file may help us discover 'related issues' leading to the solution of problems users are having.

*Click on your "Start" button.
*Select "Run".
(For Win7, you may need to use Search from
the Start menu to find the "Run" icon)
*Clear the "Open" box and type "dxdiag" (without the quotes).
*Click "OK".
*A box called "DirectX Diagnostic Tool" should open.
*At the bottom of this window, you will find a button called "Save All Information".
*Click this button.
*A box will pop up prompting you to save a file called "dxdiag.txt"
*Save this file to your "Desktop".
*Now you should see a text file called "dxdiag.txt" sitting on your Windows desktop.
*That's it!! Now we will have the info necessary to help you efficiently

Just cut and paste it into this thread and yes it is large.

Re: I need help with programming my joystick

Post by PV »

OK, I had to dig a bit to discover an nVidia Quadro FX 1400
is comparable to an nVidia Gf 6800, so we're talking a 2004
vintage, roughly. That corresponds well to the 128MB vidRAM.
Coupled with the 2 Core Xeon (slightly newer, somewhere between
2005 and 2008 depending on details in which I am not fluent)
we are looking at a workstation machine about eight years
old. The vidcard has less than 1/10th the RAM of current
hardware, and the CPU is similarly nowhere near as muscular
as current issue. This means first you won't be able to see
lots of the eye candy available in the current patch version,
as your vidcard can't hold that much imagery.

This explains your "BoBII English Text error" (all crashes of
BoBII have that label) - the default settings for v2.12 will
have overwhelmed your system.

You will have considerable difficulty running BoBII any where near
its current maximum settings, but I think you will be able to get
something at least workable, with appropriate adjustments.

So, first of all, I'm afraid the Multiskin option is going to have to be
drastically scaled back, which may require some work on your part,
or it can be simply omitted. Options would include trying to find
a very old version, say 2.07 or so, or making use of the "multiskin
light" tweaks described here: http://www.a2asimulations.com/forum/vie ... 48&t=23195
(Multiskin currently gives you different skins and call numbers for
all aircraft. Older versions do so only for certain planes, and fewer
the farther back you go. The Multiskin Light tweak allows the
variable call numbers and one or two skins for all plane types, so is
an improvement over the stock release which has only one skin with
a fixed call number for each type of plane.)

The next step will be to make several selections for the options to
dial the sim back pretty severely, choosing "low" for many and
possibly most options. A good strategy is to start with everything
on low, and then increment a few things til you run into trouble.
The first post here outlines the key items which cripple weak systems
and need to be knocked back:
http://www.a2asimulations.com/forum/vie ... 17&t=10091

Options are adjusted in the GUI menus, but also in the bdg.txt file,
in the BoBII root folder, which is edited using notebook. It is large
and disorganized, so it must be searched with the notebook find
function to locate items to edit. Don't ignore this, as the bdg.txt
items listed in the post I linked above are critical for getting weak
systems to cope with BoBII. They basically return the sim to something
resembling its initial release graphics, but with the benefit of about
seven years of bug killing.

I expect this should get you up and running, but it is possible your
machine is simply too weak to cope with patch 2.12. In that case
I would recommend seeing if you can find v2.10 still out there,
which has most of the bug fixes, but considerably less graphics
enhancements. However I wouldn't consider this until you've
done all you can to get v2.12 going. One item not listed in the
linked post, a drastic move for weak vidcards, is to rename the
ObjectAdds subfolder to any other name, thus removing all the
non-essential ground objects.

Well, assuming you get things working, which I fully expect you
will, you may acquire the addiction for this pursuit, and at some
point in the future contemplate upgrading your system to handle
the full graphics load. This is the peril, you pay $20 for software
with endless free upgrade patches, and you end up looking at
spending a grand on hardware. Don't say I didn't warn you... Image

Re: I need help with programming my joystick

Post by mptbowl »

Hi PV,Thanks for all that, I'll get onto it. Is there something I can add to the pc tower that would improve things, maybe an up to date graphics card Will, by doing what you have said, mean I will be able to programme my joystick properly. I only have x/y and z axis and fire at the moment which is incredibly frustrating. I look forward to the day I can actually get into combat. I must say thank you again for all your help. I'll probably get into a bit of a mess at first so you may not have heard the last of me.

mptbowl, once you get your machine to the spec you need to run BoB, if you're running XP you can use MS's Sidewinder Central software to program your joystick, using the work-around described here: http://shockwaveproductions.com/forum/v ... php?t=6966

Hi Baza I can actually get the game to run on my computer, Although as PV pointed out not perfectly on the visual side where I can see it can be alot better. The point is the game is not allowing me to fully program either my sidewinder or Saitek evo joysticks which work perfectly well on microsoft combat simulator so it's not the sticks a such. I only have x,y,z and fire on the joystick. Once I have the stick working as it should do, do I feel I can tweak the other settings and download updates. Although I have learnt loads of new stuff which is great. Got any ideas. I'll look into the link and see what happens.

You should be able to assign buttons to your joystick. Your PC performance should not impact that function unless something is wrong with the stick or your OS is messed up somehow or you are not assigning buttons correctly.

I strongly suspect the last.

Here is a procedure for assigning keys to your joystick which you should try to understand and try:

1)Go to controllers, then click on KEYMAPPING.

2)Scroll through the list, and left click with the mouse once to highlight the current button/key assign to the control of your choice (note: left click the key you want but in the right column). At the bottom, a message will appear:

"polling input devices.. please press the button you want to map, or the "cancel" button to stop polling. Press "clear" button to remove a mapping." (NOTE: You must get the Polling message to assign keys).

When you press the required stick button or key, this should be recognized and listed by the function you wanted to remap.

Repeat for all commands required.

NOTE: You must hit "save" on the bottom left of the screen to save the joystick keys. If you leave without hitting save the keys will "not" be saved.
Note the polling message that the SW is ready for the button press. also NOTE the "red" highlight where I left clicked. The Warning box should/will come up when you press the button. The A2 B6 means the key selected has been assigned to the controller #2 button 6.

Hi Buddye, I did exactly what you said and created my first command which was fantastic and released me from frustration and back in control which I am extremely grateful to you for. I also used PVs' advice and upgraded to 2.07 which means I have to set things a bit low but I'm really enjoying what I'm being able to do. I do still have a problem with the throttle. I tried to keymap it but it's a slider and not a button and I couldn't figure it out. I looked on the info that came with the game and showed what each key on the keyboard does and it said this was automatic. Both my joysticks throttles work with other flight simulation games so it's something to do with programming it in BOB 2. I'm wondering if you can work your magic and help me with that.
Apart from that, it's thanks to you and PV and the others that I'm up and running and getting down to it and really enjoying it.
Could you recommend a graphics card or some other gizmo I could get to upgrade the graphics as I said I have set things low to prevent crashing the programme as PV prescribed, but I can see the potential of the games tantalising visuals. Fantastic
Anyway my apologies for waffling on a bit, and thanks again.
all the best Michael

Your throttle is a axis assignment. See info below:

1) Before you start trying to configure your stick in game, make sure all switches are OFF.

2) CONTROLLERS, CUSTOM
This is where you can assign the main joystick axis.
Left click on the required axis under the "assign axis" list. The axis should be highlighted red. Then move the required axis in it's full range of motion and it should be recognized.

3)If you make a mistake with the axis assignment, highlight the one you want to undo then click on "clear" to return to it's default setting.

4)Repeat until all main axis have been assigned to your liking.
Once complete, click on CONTINUE (top right of screen). And when asked if you want your changes saved, click on YES.

5)IMPORTANT. Now, exit the game back to desktop, then restart it. The game does not permanently keep any changes or settings unless it has been quit & restarted.

NOTE:if you have a problem then go to the User Manual under the "Controls" section (the User Manual is located in your BOBII folder in the docs file. Use it when you need info on settings , options, and features.
