New PC Spec - running BOB WOV

Post by Cirrus »

I'm looking to get a new PC, primarily for flight sim/gaming and hope to be able to run BOB II on max settings (as much as possible). I also want to run IL-2 CoD at some point as well. Since the last PC I bought was an Athlon 700mhtz with a TNT 2 GPU I'm a little out of date on the PC world. I've been looking at various websites and the below looks like the sort of thing I'm aiming at..

Intel Core i5 3570K Processor Overclocked to up to 4.5GHz
(is the Intel Core i7 3770K Processor Overclocked to up to 4.6GHz worth an extra £100?)
Asus P8Z77-V LX Motherboard
(is the Asus P8Z77-V LX worth an extra £40?)
8GB Corsair PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 Memory (2 x 4GB sticks)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 2048MB Graphics Card
(is the Ti version of above worth an extra £80?)
Intel 120GB 520 Series Solid State Drive
2000GB 7200RPM Hard Disk - 6Gbps
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

I plan to install the OS on the SDD and programs/games on the HDD, but this may change and i'll install BOB on the SDD as well.

Can anyone advise how BOB will run with this setup?

Cheers

EDIT:

Forgot to add that I've been playing BOB WOV for a few years on my old laptop, and while it works I do have to have everything turned down to minimum and only run 2.09 update. I'd love to be able to play this with everything turned up, especially the weather and ground detail, and also add the multi-skin update. Running 2.09 also means I can't try multi-player, which I'm very keen to help test.

I can't answer your questions on the differences between these components,
as I'm not that up to date. You can select performance charts and drift through
the comparisons here: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/cpu- ... s,140.html
for the cpu, and you'll find the GPUs on a similar chart-page. A quick sampling
suggests the i73770 is 10 to 30% better than the i53570, I don't know how the
prices compare.

At any rate, you should have no trouble at all running the current patch of BoB2
full out on such a machine. I presume we'll eventually mod things up to make it
a challenge, but I imagine it will be a few years. For one, thing, I'd have to up
my machine, which is a bit down the hill from yours...
