Buddye, CTD using Win8 64 bit.

Post by MattArgo »

Hi Buddye,

I have been trying to get BoB2 up and running on my Win8 64bit Quad2Core NVidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti 4GigRAM system.
It had been running properly on my Win7 64bit OS before on the same hardware except that I had a Radeon 5700 series card at that time. (I have all the latest drivers and updates for my system installed including a new copy of DirectX 9c.)

I wanted to get back into BoB2 WOV when I saw that the 2.12 update had been finished. I was really looking forward to it.
I get the infamous "BoB English Text has stopped working" error then a complete freeze up requiring use of Task Manager to close the frozen program. This happens after 1 to 3 minutes into gameplay in any setting including Campaign (new or saved), Instant Action or Mission. I don't remember getting this since 2005 when I got the game and had to use the "OPTIMISE_OBJECTS_AT_RUNTIME=ON" line to correct the CTD English text has stopped working" back then. It worked well afterwards.
This program is very important to me for sentimental reasons as my best friend's father was a WWII Battle of Britain pilot and my father was an RCAF B-24 Liberator navigator/bombardier veteran. So this is homage to their memory and to all the airmen who fought to save our culture and people.

I have been avidly reading your instructions to many others with this problem here and I have tried every single suggestion:
-reinstalling to a different hard drive from scratch after cleaning the registry and erasing all traces of the previous install,
-using the Large Address Aware program, (although I now see that this is built into v2.12. Bravo.)
-turning off in game videos,
-resetting my pc display to small (100% meaning 96)
-using the native resolutions for my wide screen system (1920 x 1080) in the program,
-checking the bdg.txt file to set those lines you mentioned properly,
-reducing the graphics settings in game,
-trying different sound settings,
-starting the program as Administrator, etc.
The only thing I could not find was the "disable desktop composition" in the compatibility tab of properties of the new shortcuts in Win8 property boxes.

I don't know if I will ever be able to run BoB2 on my current system again but I thought I would just let you know about this variation on the issue with the faint hope you might be able to help me solve the problem.

I have copied my debuglog.txt file for you here below but I will only copy the dxdiag.txt file if you request it because it is rather long.
Thank you in advance for your help to others here and for taking the time to read my post and consider my problem.

We do not have any BDG members running windos 8.

Post the first 20 line of your crashlog (located in the BOBII folder in the crashlog.txt file) for me to review.

BTW, great PC......

Neall,

I too have tried running BobII on Windows 8, and like you, it crashes every time, and always with the same crash. I don't know for certain, but I believe Windows 8, has something running in the background that I don't know of. I also found. Even though I have switched all programs that automatically update and do things in the background, off. Some of them were still automatically running. So I had to delve very deeply to find how to switch them off.

For Buddye's use. He will need a crash log text which should be in the BobII directory. If it is not in that directory, then you will find that Windows 8, has put it where it thinks it should be. So you will need to do a search.

If your crash log text is the same as mine. The crash was in d9d?.dll. I'm not sure but I believe this file is out of Buddye's control and is a crash due to something running in the background.

I still haven't got to the bottom of this, so have temporary reconnected my Windows 7 disk and disconnected the Windows 8 disc.
Prem.

Hello again, Buddye. Thank you so much for replying to my query.
For what it is worth, here is my latest crashlog.txt file produced
a few minutes ago from a fresh CTD English text not working in an
Instant Action flight.
Thanks again for giving your time and attention to my variation on
this theme.

Re: Buddye, CTD using Win8 64 bit.

Post by Buddye »

The crashlog shows you crashed on a windows program (actually a DirectX program) which I do not have the code.

One key question:

Did you update to the latest DirectX 9C (the version of DirectX that bobii uses) which is seperate from newer versions of DirectX.

According to the following web installer the newest is 4/11/2011:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... aspx?id=35

BTW, the Large Address Aware is built into the BOBII EXE in 2.12.

Greetings, Prem.
Thank you for sharing your experience with me.
I found your observations to be interesting.
There is something in Windows 8 that is contributing
a new factor to the crashing problem.
I have submitted the latest crashlog.txt to Buddye.
Perhaps he'll spot something relevant in it.
We should stand him a round of drinks for the yeoman
service he is offering us all in this forum.
Hip hip hooray!

Cheers, Prem.

Thanks for your reply to my crashlog, Buddye.
I did download a fresh copy of the DirectX 9c file a few
days ago and I did install it then
but I will follow your link and download it again and try
it. Perhaps it is newer than the one I found.
I'll get back to you after I do so.
Thanks very much for your observations!
Wish us luck!
Tally ho!

OK. I've just installed the latest version of DirectX9c and rebooted my pc.
Same crash at the same place give or take a few seconds. :?

Re: Buddye, CTD using Win8 64 bit.

Post by TigerMoth »

I wonder if this may have to do with video card drivers? I have seen several reports from people using DirectX9 games without issue on Windows 8 (even some where DirectX 9 is the ONLY thing wokring properly).

I see you each have different cards (ATI & Nvidia). Do you know if these have newer drivers installed because of the Win8 upgrade? I know that the newer ATI drivers are notorious for causing isues with BOBII. It might be worth seeing if there are older drivers available that will still work with win8.

Hi John,
Thanks for your observations. Video card drivers can be a pain all right!
My drivers are all up to date and I play a number of other modern games
without any problem including DCS World, Skyrim, FarCry3 and others. They
all work well. It's just poor old BoB2.
What Buddye narrowed down was that there is a library file called d3d9.dll
that is the culprit in the crashlog. I checked this out on the net and see
that many people have had issues in other games like Skyrim and Fallout and
fFactor due to this file.
I checked out on my machine and found five instances of it but in three different
sizes and date/time stamps. So I am thinking of trying to "homogenize" them
but now I have to find out how to take "ownership" of permissions in order to
be able to change files in Windows\System32 and Windows\SysWOW64 where two of
these files of the same name but of different sizes reside.
Maybe there is something there. I'll let you know.
Thanks for your interest.
Cheers
Neill

Buddye, more on the d3d9.dll file issue.

After you identified the culprit as this d3d9.dll file as the "crash site"
(for lack of a better word!), I checked this out on the net and see
that many people have had issues in other games like Skyrim and Fallout and
fFactor due to this file.
I checked it out on my machine and found five instances of it but in three different
sizes and date/time stamps. So I am thinking of trying to "homogonize" them
but now I have to find out how to take "ownership" of permissions in order to
be able to change files in Windows\System32 and Windows\SysWOW64 where two of
these files of the same name but of different sizes reside.
It might also be necessary to put one of these files in the BoB2 main folder.
I'm going to play around with this this weekend and I'll get back to you
to report any change.
Thanks again for all the help you give us with this thorny problem.
I'm sure we're going to eventually sort it out, old boy. Pip pip and
all that rot. Tally ho!

John,

You could well be right. I have always used ATI cards since the rage version and always those made by Sapphire. I have always updated to the latest expecting them not to work in view of other people having problems. I've always waited until Sapphire put the new drivers on their website, because then they have updated them for their own cards. The latest driver version is 12.10. They also have three beta versions, although I never use any beta versions of any drivers.

When I plug-in my Windows 8 disc. I shall remove the latest drivers and try an earlier version. One point though. I am using the latest drivers with my Windows 7 version. It is exactly the same computer, except that I change the drives over. Depending on which system wish to use.
Prem.

Buddye, SOLUTION FOUND! (I think )

Post by MattArgo »

I have just succeeded in playing a full scene in Instant Action without a CTD... twice!
The solution seems to have been to copy the d3d9.dll file from C:\Windows\System32 into
the main BoB2 folder! After doing this, the program started, I tweaked my settings and
started the same Instant Action scenario I had been testing all this time. I took off
and joined the furball waiting for the freeze up. The action got very heated but still
no CTD! I got shot down and crashed. The program continued to run. I started up the
same scenario again, flew and dogfought(?) but had to bail out after
blasting a Bf110 and all ended normally!
So that seems to have been the solution so far.
Now I'll go back to campaign and see how it goes.
So, Buddye, thanks for putting me on the right track by correctly reading the crashlog.
I hope this helps others with this predicatment!
Tally Ho ho ho ho! :o

This is from my Windows 7 structure, but do mean that you copied the highlighted d3d9.dll file highlited,
and put it inti the the BoBII root folder?

dogfought(?)
Not a "proper" Queen's English word, for (was in many dogfights) but as an ignorant USA man, I know what it means, and it is shorter. I like it. :)

For BoBII this d3d9.dll has been:
a sliver stuck our finger!
a cockle burr seed that sticks in our socks!
a cockroach that we cannot kill!
a rat that we cannot trap!

Oh yes. d3d9.dll is one thing that always pops up when testers report CTD's.

--------------------------------------------------

I just did a Search for d3d9 on the Beta Tester Forum.

Uncovered a nest of d3d9 cockroaches! (the yellow spots). 4 more pages dating back to v2.11 days.
Yeah.. this one has been polluting us for a long time. Even back in v2.11.

Here, Buddye writes his standard reply to a d3d9.dll CTD:

"Hi Chumleigh,

You crashed in module d3d9.dll at 0023:4E0A8F51, Direct3DShaderValidatorCreate9()+234289 byte(s).

This is the old shader CTD, d3d9 is a Windows program.

The oldest CTD in BOBII and there is no known fix."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I insert the d3d9.dll file from C:\Windows\System32 into the main BoB2 folder,
it probably will not kill me and my Windows 7 computer, and BoBII.

I will test from now on with it in. See what happens.
