Still doesnt work :(

Post by danb12 »

Hi all,

I have a post from a few months ago about 'Text not working' I am desperate to play this game so have tried again, uninstalling totally, getting a new copy of v2.11 and it still doesnt work... :(

I get a load of NET STOP 'xxxx' when I install v2.11 don't think I should and my PC is only 3 months old and runs other programs absolutely fine!

This is the first crash log...

Hello danb12

Buddye will give the official recommendations and instructions. I personally have a new computer (specs in the signature) and my crash problems have been because of two things. 1) Graphics card settings and 2) LAA related problems.

For 2.12 the LAA is included in the bob.exe but for earlier versions you have to use it as a third party application. You can download it from here: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showt ... p?t=112556 and it has instructions how to make your bob.exe LAA enabled. Now I don't know if this will fix your problem, but as far as I know it won't hurt either. The LAA problems are common with new high end computers.

I also recieved such "text not working" and "exception_excess_violation in module unknown" problems upon my initial installation assuming I am remembering correct. I no longer get such crashes either and believe was resolved using the LAA (as have an installer for that and an backup exe sitting around) and the general recommendations that Budeye gives.

Also cheers creepy, good to know I can then delete that and do not have to worry about re-LAA'ing my exe again once I update.

Oh you have an installation problem, sorry I missed that. Well LAA won't help that. I have never experienced those. Then I don't know what else to do except reload the 2.11 file incase something went wrong with the download. I'm sure someone here knows if others have suffered from the same problem.

Your services upon your machine are being shut down upon trying to install BoB through an command prompt window? Is that an standard part in the installation does anyone know, I would not think so though, cannot remember whether I saw that during mine. What happens then Danb12 does the installation just stop or what? At what point in the installation is that brought up also?

Also Danb12 I see that you are running Norton/Symantec as your antivirus? I would recommend (should you not be already) disabling thier resident shields just whilst you install the game also, and include exceptions once installed. As I was an Technical Support Advisor within an IT company prior to March and we would always get problems with customers trying to install the client side software upon machines running Norton/Symantec, just needed to disable the AV temporarily and then the installations went though as normal. Although do not know whether this rings true with BoB and other Norton/Symantec users get trouble, but I could very well imagine they would.

This is a very strange one.

Here is a link that talks about Windows net stop. May be a setting in your windows that no one else is using.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 90715.aspx

I would guess that Norton is at the bottom of this issue as wehave had nothing but trouble with players using Norton. See this link:

Ah, this is the BoB2 stop_srv.bat file running, shutting down
everything that windows is trying to run in the background
while BoB2 runs. The bat file comes with a standard list of
likely suspects, and kill commands for them. When you do an
install, somewhere along the line it asks you do you want to
have this file run. It was necessary in the early BoB years for
machines that were weaker, and/or had services running that
would interfere with BoB2. I rather don't think it is much needed
these days, though it's always handy to have around, especially
if you have a particularly annoying and difficult antivirus,as you
can edit the bat file (it's in BoB2 root) and set it to turn off your
internet when you start the game, as well as your a-v, though some
a-v progs don't allow themselves to be turned off this way, and you
may have to do that explicitly through their GUI. Most folks these days
just find a more user friendly a-v rather than put up with all that.

Beyond that, I don't know much about the stop_srv.bat file, as I never
needed to use it. I am not sure if it gets set to run on each BoB2 load,
or if you must run it manually each time; there appears to be no mention
of it in the BoB2 manual (how did we manage to miss that?!) It was introduced
with the shortly-after-initial-release patch in Sept 2005, and was discussed
in the patch release post then, but I can't seem to find that now, so I can't
tell you anything more about it. At any rate, if it has been set to run every
time (ie if that option exists) I suggest you turn that off.

Alright we need to start again with this one I beleive as many details are ommitted here that are included within his orgional post.

PV your right thats the batch producing those, I also seem to have this within my installation folder it seems. However the problem with this messages according to him (ommitted here but included within origional topic) are that he recieves upon each line an error message stating "The procedure entry point I-NetPathType could not be located in the dynamic link library NETAPP32.dll" however I've just run the batch and also recieve the same problem so I do not believe is any concern, all thats happening is those services are not being shut down.

Image

Now should the sole problem then be the ingame crashes then maybe is indeed related to the problems surrounding LAA. However LAA just allows an 32 Bit application such as BoB to be able to see over 2GB memory when the operating system can see much more available. And likewise an operating system can just see over 2GB when they are 64 Bit and 32 Bit are limited to 2GB. And according to Danb12 the machine that hes running is 4GB RAM with Windows 7 32 Bit, so his operating system let alone BoB is unable to see over 2GB outa the 4GB installed, sorry but due to your operating system 2GB is being wasted.

So in other words maybe this is just someone running the game with settings that his machines RAM cannot cope with.

Now then Danb12 can you confirm and do not leave out anything in errors, screenshots are massive assistance with any error messages also;
  • 1. Apart from the command prompt and associated error message that I've screenshotted in my previous post. Do you recieve any other problems during your installation. Does the installation continue and complete?

    2. Can you start the game? Can you start your flights?

    3. Is the problem that stops you playing just crashes during flight that state something such as "english text stopped working"?

    4. Go to Control Panel, then System and screenshot us what is shown there.

    5. Can you screenshot us your game settings, maybe even post the BDG, as should the others agree with my assessment in previous post then we probrably just need to reduce your settings to make less impact upon your computer memory?
