CTD woes

Post by Baz »

Hi all,

I have recently formatted my machine, and so have a limited number of programs on the hard disk, one of which is of course BOB 2 (which I love).

I've been playing the game for sometime now, and have followed the various advice, concerning native resolutions, desktop composition, and administrator rights, and the game loads fine, and mission loading times are not too long. My graphics setting in the game are modest, and I get good FPS, but I continually encounter CTDs.

I'm not a programmer, but I can see the repeated errors for the multiskin texture(?), but before I try anything like a reinstall of the multiskins or the game, I thought I'd post in case there is some other problem.

I have run Zonealarm and System Mechanic for some time on my machine, and they do not present any conflicts that I can see. I also run Trackir5, and whilst I can see the BDG_OUT message about TRACKir gui not started, it seems to work fine.

Below is a DXDiag followed by some of the contents of my BDG_OUT file.

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this problem.
Thanks in advance Baz.

Re: CTD woes

Post by Buddye »

Hi Baz, welcome to BOBII and the BOBII forums and community. Sorry for the problem.

You are correct to post your CTD problem as the current status of BOBII is that I am "not" working on "any" valid BOBII code CTD problems. Most of the current CTD issues are caused by basic PC environment issues. As of the version 2.11 Update which I assume you are running, BOBII is void of any code CTD issue that have been reported but you could have the next. Find a file in your BOBII folder called crashlog.txt and post the first 20 lines of the last crashlog in the crashlog.txt file.

Thanks for DxDiag data and from looking at it I have 3 recommendations for you if you choose to try them:

1. Your video drivers are old (Driver Date/Size: 4/20/2011 02:07:48, 795648 bytes) and you may want to update.

2. Your sound drivers are also very old (Date and Size: 8/5/2009 18:46:38, 1974944 bytes) and should be updated.

3. Have you updated the directX 9c? Rmember you PC supports Direct x 11, 10. and 9c which are all seperate. BOBII needs directx 9c updated to the latest directX.

Here is a web installer link for you to use for the DirectX 9c update (the Direct X web installer will update only what is needed to get you up to date).

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... aspx?id=35

I read that you have done your homework to get BOBII running but please "double check" or complete the following:

First, in Options->Adv->Game , Be sure skip in-game videos is checked (if you get to the Menu screens).

Did you make the windows 7 fix (must be re-done when you re-install, NOTE: I assume you are running Win 7)?

Note6: Windows Vista and Window 7 users. All Vista and Windows 7 users will need to apply the 'Vista/Windows 7 fix' to your desktop shortcut as a fresh 2.11 install will overwrite the previous shortcut.
Right click on shortcut and go to properties. Go to the compatibility tab. Check "disable desktop composition" and check the privilege level, run this program as an administrator.

The problem might also be your virus software see this thread:

Re: CTD woes

Post by PV »

Do you by chance know the exact number of your gfx card? ATI/AMD have gotten
in the habit the last few years of setting the hardware identifier for their cards as
"ATI Radeon HD [nn]00 Series " rather than showing the exact model number,
which makes identifying the expected card performance impossible. Not too
significant in this case if it's a 4650 or 4670, but if it were a 4620, well, that
might be where a problem could arise - should be lots of memory for multiskin,
but maybe not enough muscle...

Re: CTD woes

Post by Baz »

Thank you guys for your prompt advice.
To start with you PV, my card is a ATI Radeon HD 4650. I run a fairly lean machine (optimised drives, registry checked etc). My graphics settings are modest. I tend to run the landscape textures at 1024 for instance, and things like particle effects at medium. I use the Historic missions to get a feel for performance (FPS) by flying in to large formations and near smoke/explosions, to see how far my frame rates might drop.

Buddye, apologise for not confirming that I am running version 2.11, with multiskins, and I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
It also occured to me (after posting) that I have five mods activated (downloaded from these forums)with JSGME, but I had CTDs before I started using mods.
I have installed the game in my root C:drive folder and not in Program Files or Program Files (x86).
With regard to the shortcut procedure, of disabling desktop composition and running as administrator, I have done that.
I have updated my video card drivers, and the driver number exceeds version 8.5. It is v8.85 (when I formatted my system last week)
My sound card drivers were also updated, although this was an automated process, so I will look in to this directly.
I was aware that DirectX 9c wouldn't be updated through Windows Update, and choosing not to do so during the install of the game, I downloaded a file from Microsoft, and did so myself.
I will check out the links you have kindly provided for both DirectX and Virus protection
I will also make sure in game videos are deactivated.

Your crashlog shows you crashed in module KERNELBASE.dll which is a windows program. I do not have source code for windows programs so the crashlog is of little specific use.

These kinds of crashes are mostly not BOBII code issues but PC environment issues (OS, OS settings, drivers, hardware, BOBII settings, directX, virus software).

Re: CTD woes

Post by Baz »

Once again, thank you Buddye for the advice.
For sometime I've suspected an underlying issue with a possible hardware failure (maybe graphics card?), or bad OS. I'm no expert, but it is a relief to know its not my favourite flying sim thats at fault.

I've made a few minor adjustments to my setup since my last post, so I'll see how things go from here. The CTD's have been infrequent, so as long as I'm afforded time for the odd dogfight and campaign session, I'm happy .

Regards
Baz.

Just keep in mind that I am not working "any" code related CTD at this time but of course there may some I have not been made aware of as yet.

Any time you have a CTD just post the crashlog and your PC specs and let me check it out if you have the time.

is this significant?

I have noticed this on most of my crashlogs also, I have 16 GB of memory

The crashlog have always been this way so I would guess it is not important.
