Crash on start up

Post by Little high »

I bought myself a new PC and also trackir 5 to give flight sims that extra touch and I have installed Bob on windows 7 64 bit outside of the program files on the first level.

When I try and load the game the picture of the spitfire comes up briefly with the loading bar but as soon as the window appears to start the game I get a "Bob English text has stopped working" error. This happens on a fresh install or a new install with 2.11 installed ahead of it (I have not added multskin yet as I want to see that it is working.

I have it set to run as administrator and have disabled the desktop composition. I have all the directx requirements needed for the game (it is a DX11 card but I use directx9c for most of the games I play) and the DPI size is exactly as it should be. My anti virus is avast and does not interfere with the game.

Here is my dxdiag report. Can anyone help me as I am itching to play this wonderful game again.

Hi and I am sorry for your problem. I think you have done your home work so I am not sure what the problem is. BTW, you have a super PC and BOBII should love it.

The first thing to check is the version of your BOBII game, is it a CD purchase or a download purchase?

Next please "double check or redo" the following.

First, in Options->Adv->Game , Be sure skip in-game videos is checked (if you get to the Menu screens (I was unsure how far you got as I am unsure what pic you mean, is it after the loading screen?).

On a new PC the DirectX is not always up to date so did you update your Direct X 9c to the latest version (remember Directx 10, 11.and 9c are all different and stand alone for different games and BOBII uses 9c). See this link for the Microsoft Web Installer (only updates what is out of date):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

If you have a wide screen monitor please re-check that you did the following:

First, set you "windows" resolution (in windows) to your monitors native resolution.

Second, because you have a Wide Screen Monitor try in game setting of resolution:

Set in options->GFX use Windows Desktop Resolution (Recommended)=OFF

Then manually select the resolution (in game) as close as possible to your monitors native resolution from the pull down list of resolution options.

Did you make the windows 7 fix (must be re-done when you re-install, NOTE: I assume you are running Win 7)?

Note6: Windows Vista and Window 7 users. All Vista and Windows 7 users will need to apply the 'Vista/Windows 7 fix' to your desktop shortcut as a fresh 2.11 install will overwrite the previous shortcut.
Right click on shortcut and go to properties. Go to the compatibility tab. Check "disable desktop composition" and check the privilege level, run this program as an administrator.

Thanks Buddye. My old PC could not handle the big battles but this one definitely will so I really hope I can get it going.

I cannot even get into the game to reach the option file as it crashes straight away. Is there a file I can edit to do the same thing?

I definitely have the correct directx's. Both the cd and 2.11 link me to the correct ones and I have them both.

Yes the windows 7 fix was done immediately after a fresh install and it still crashes when I try to start up the game. My resolution is set to normal and I will use those settings if I can ever get in.

Which directory is your game installed to Buddye?

This is something very basicly wrong. You are not trying to run BOBI (the old 1997 Rowan game). What does you CD say on the cover? The BOBI game is not the same as BOBII and BOBI will not work with BOBII updates.

You are saying you are not even getting to the first Menu screen.

There are no spitfire pic's on the menu. Here is what you should see on the first Menu screen in BOBII:

Image

If you have a BOBII CD and you have ran the 2.11 update then something is very wrong with you install or your BOBII CD.

Try a reinstall of BOBII following this procedure:

Each Step is Important (Note- do not worry about the MultiSkin for now as you can install it later)

1. download and unpack the 2.11 self installer or re-download the 2.11 just in case you had a corrupted download the first time
2. Uninstall old version or BoBII
3. Delete all files from the BoBII folder (leave none). [IMPORTANT: These old files left by the uninstaller can cause issues with the new EXE.]
4. Run a registry cleaner (like CC cleaner - a free program) as you had an old install of BobII (Important to cleanup)
5. Reinstall BoBII game CD or Download version that you purchased
6. Run (execute) the 2.11 Update that you downloaded

Re-do the following Windows 7 fix as you had a new install:

Right click on shortcut and go to properties. Go to the compatibility tab. Check "disable desktop composition" and check the privilege level, run this program as an administrator.

I updated my graphics card driver and it works now. I have no idea why it wouldn't work on my old driver as it is still new but either way the 12.4 worked. Previously I was getting another screen with a plane and a red loading bar (I guessed it was a spitfire) before it started to load up the game. Now it doesn't show that screen, it just cuts straight to the one you have shown and I am good to go.

Thanks for your help Buddye and it may be one to remember with the catalyst 12.3 drivers.

I thought I was but then I turn the PC on again today and the "English text" error is back although I could definitely load the game up yesterday after the new driver was installed. I will fiddle around with my video card settings and see if anything helps out. I tried instaling the game to my second hard drive with UAC off but that made no difference.

I am having unrelated problems with my AMD 7950 so I took it out and when I tried BoB2 with just my integrated graphics it worked so my trouble must be with my AMD card. It fails to load under both 12.3 and 12.4 drivers.

I know that AMD cards can sometimes have issues but surely that is not right, I am sure there must be members here who fly with AMD?

I take it when you run your AMD card that you are switching your integrated graphics card off in the BIOS. Otherwise you will be trying to run two cards, which I suspect will be causing you the problems.

As you can see I do run AMD cards and have done for many years.

Bob 2 does not like any programs running in the background so all scheduled program should be switched off. And any virus program switched into game mode.

My motherboard automatically disables the on board when another card us detected.

Interestingly it is not just an AMD problem as it has stopped working again with the GTX 260. What has happened 3 times is that when I install new drivers (amd or nvidia) it will work for the first time I try but if I try to load it up after it crashes as soon as I try to run it.

Any idea why that would happen? Completely baffling.

My antivirus makes no difference, on, off or in game mode.

Hi High,

I personally wouldn't take the chance that it is automatically switching off the on-board video. Maybe I'm a sceptic but anything on-board. I make sure it is switched off so that the wrong drivers cannot get loaded.

I don't know whether this will cure your problem, but I must admit it is battling. I suspect it's got to be something to do with the video cards, drivers as it is happening with both cards.

At the moment I have no further suggestions, unless I remember something that has happened to me in the past.

Good luck with it anyway, but do let us know if you succeed and if I think of anything else I will let you know.
Prem.

If you are getting crashes, please post the crash log, in the standard format here.
The file is called crashlog.txt in the BoB root folder, see any of the last few threads
here for examples of what to quote from it.

Oh, one thing that hasn't been mentioned that will lead to crashes: don't run BoB in
any emulation mode - it must be run "straight" in W7 (or Vista).

I have figured out the problem. I was ignoring the other variable which could have an effect...... my joystick. The reason that it worked the first time with new graphics drivers is that those are the only times I did not have my joystick plugged in. Finally

So I have a speedlink black widow joystick which worked fine in my old windows vista 32 bit PC with BoB 2. I am using the same driver now as I did on my old PC as it is the same driver whether you are using vista 32 or W7 64 bit, there is no alternative driver.

The joystick works fine with Il2 1946 but crashes BoB on startup. Any idea on the game issue? Is it a setting?

Thanks for sticking with me guys, it is greatly appreciated as this is one of my favourite games ever and I would be gutted if it became a no goer.

I expect you need their W7 64 driver, from here:

Thank you so much PV.

I completely missed that because when I searched for drivers 2 months ago that beta driver does not even seem to appear in the support options http://www.speedlink.com/?p=3&cat=414&pid=1533&paus=1. That is why I thought there was no alternative driver. Same product, 2 different support screens :?

So I tested it out and now BoB2 loads up fine with the new driver, problem solved. I had to send my new graphics card back to the seller as it does not produce a signal any more so I am back to my GTX260 which is a bummer but this makes up for it as I can now take to the skies.

Thanks again.
