Hi there -- this is my first post on these forums, so thanks in advance for all the work you've all done, and continue to do, on BOB2. I'm a complete novice but am very excited about learning the ins and outs of this fantastic-looking sim.

I've searched the forum but I can't find a specific solution to one problem I've encountered. I'm running BOB2 with the 2.11 patch and multiskin on a bootcamped Macbook Pro (2010 vintage) under Win7 x64, using a Nvidia GT330M card. I have also applied the Large Address Aware patch and I'm using the beta .exe that Buddye provided to another correspondent on these forums. Both of these latter additions seem to have decreased, but not eliminated, the following problem.

I've been running Instant Action missions to learn the basics of the flight model. Repeatedly, when I quit out of the 3D using Alt-X, the game crashes to a black screen and has to be manually exited using the task manager. Occasionally it does what it's supposed to do -- switches resolution, minimizes, brings up the debrief screen -- but not always. I'd say I have about a 50 per cent crash rate on quitting missions via Alt-X. Sometimes it just freezes without even going to a black screen, and I see the white mouse pointer come up over a frozen cockpit view.

Can anyone help out, please? I'd be so grateful. DXDIAG info below.

Hi and welcome to BOBII and the BOBII forums and community.

Hmm, I have not seen a CTD after an Alt+X in a very long time.

LooK in your BOBII folder and find a file called crashlog.txt. Copy the first 20 line of the "last 4 CTD crashlogs and paste them into this thread for us to review.

Hi there Buddye, thanks for the quick reply.

I've looked in the crashlog.txt file and I attach the first 20 lines of the only dump in there. Worth noting, though, that a) there only seems to be one, b) it dates from several days ago, I think before I installed the new beta .exe and c) that the freeze / black screen / crash / whatever has happened to me several times this morning on leaving Instant Action via ALT-X. The display either freezes and pops up the white mouse pointer, or goes to the black screen that more usually appears while the game is transitioning between the menus and the 3D. In either case, waiting does no good: I have to hit ctrl-alt-del, open Task Manager and close the BOB process.

Anyway: old crashlog follows. As I say, whatever this issue was may already have been fixed. Thanks for your time!

As I said this is a very strange problem and the Crashlog is of little help. The reason you have so few crashlogs is that the crash is occurring outside BOBII after the Alt+X, I think.

I think you need to do a very fresh install of BOBII. Here is the install procedure that I recommend (Hopefully then, you will have the same install on your PC that I have on my PC):

Each Step is Important (Note- do not worry about the MultiSkin for now as you can install it later)

1. download and unpack the 2.11 self installer or re-download the 2.11 just in case you had a corrupted download the first time
2. Uninstall old version or BoBII
3. Delete all files from the BoBII folder (leave none). [IMPORTANT: These old files left by the uninstaller can cause issues with the new EXE.]
4. Run a registry cleaner (like CC cleaner - a free program) as you had an old install of BobII (Important to cleanup)
5. Reinstall BoBII game CD or Download version that you purchased
6. Run (execute) the 2.11 Update that you downloaded

Re-do the following Windows 7 fix as you had a new install:

Right click on shortcut and go to properties. Go to the compatibility tab. Check "disable desktop composition" and check the privilege level, run this program as an administrator.

Try a few Instant Action Missions and report on this thread.

mudlarker, I hope I'm wrong, but looks like this is a common Macbook (with NVIDIA 330M) issue :

Good luck.

Racoon, thanks for looking that out. I think (I hope!) that what they're describing is a different error: one where the screen goes totally black and the machine stops accepting input. I haven't run into that yet on the Windows side of my machine, thankfully, despite playing some games that are considerably more demanding than BoB2 graphics-wise. The problem I'm encountering seems to be related to BoB2 switching windows or display modes between the 4:3 options mode and the fullscreen (1680x1050) 3d window ... when it goes to a black screen or pops up the white Windows pointer, I can still regain control of the system by entering Task Manager and shutting down the BoB application. Fingers crossed, but I don't think it is the failure they're reporting on that Apple thread. I appreciate you taking the time to help out though.

Buddye, thanks. I'll try a fresh installation as you instruct, and report back.

OK, reinstalled, and the problem is still there: alt-x causes a black screen or a freeze. However, I have an idea about what it may be. I'm using a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 stick, and I think the problem may arise when I alt-x at a time when the joystick is receiving a force, ie after a crash or at other times during flight. I've just conducted a test with another non-FFB joystick and, based on a small sample, alt-x seems to work better in the aftermath of crashes.
Could this be anything to do with the issue, have you encountered the problem before and might there be a solution? I'd hate to abandon my FFB2 for a stick without rudder, throttle or FFB.
Thanks again.

EDIT: or failing a complete solution, is there perhaps a way to edit a config file so the stick doesn't give such a thunderous racket when you crash the plane? On my system the force is continuously applied, so even when the plane is a smoking pile of fragments the stick is still rocking all over the desk and never stops. Bug or feature?

mudlarker, By what you described earlier:
Quote:
when I quit out of the 3D using Alt-X,
The game crashes to a black screen and has to be manually exited using the task manager.
I have about a 50 per cent crash rate on quitting missions via Alt-X.
Sometimes it just freezes without even going to a black screen, and I see the white mouse pointer come up over a frozen cockpit view.

It seems the demand on your graphic card is more than what it can handle, because these are the symptoms I had experienced before I upgraded my graphic card (and I still have to turnoff my anti virus program and unplug my modem)! In order to find that out, try the following suggestions:

Unplug the modem (since this game is off line anyway) and turn off your anti virus program.
Turn off the multiskin, set the game resolution to minimum. I hope this help to improve your gaming issue.

Cheers.

Thanks for trying the re-install as I just wanted to ensure you have a good install befor we go any father in debugging.

Sorry but I do not run FF as I am a CH stick and pedals type.

You can turn off FF in the controls function.

Options->Controls

Use For FF If you have a 'force feedback' joystick then you can tick this box. If your controller is not force feedback enabled then this feature will be grayed out.
You can also disable or select force feedback levels for each of the following effects:

Gunfire -transmits vibrations caused by the guns on your aircraft.
Buffet - transmits vibration caused by buffeting if you are near the stall condition, close to an explosion, or close to the speed of sound (unlikely).
Aerodynamic - causes stiffening of the controls at high speed.
Airframe - transmits vibrations transmitted through the airframe from the ground - i.e. when you are taking off or landing (or crashing).

Buddye, thanks. It appears I can use my FFB2 if I turn off the airframe and buffet effects -- the Alt-X error on quitting only seems to happen when the FFB2 is receiving one of those forces, either after a crash or during a manoeuvre. A shame not to have them, but better than the alternative. Thanks for the tip.

Racoon, I don't think it's a graphics card problem; if it were I'd expect to see problems entering or during the 3d mode, not after leaving it. The game runs perfectly smooth with most settings on high apart from this one error on quitting.

While I'm at it, does anyone around here know anything about Rowan's old MiG Alley sim? I'm having a problem with that too: it locks my system entirely with a hideous buzzing noise and a black screen every time it enters 3D. I feel all this has something to do with Win7 x64, an OS I wish I'd never installed. May be time to dig out the XP discs again.

Thanks for all your help!

BOBII likes theWindows 7 64 bit (I run it also). I am not sure about Mig Alley.

The problem with your Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 stick is that it is very old and the driver support has not kept up with the new OS's.

I would guess that a error exist that crashes BOBII in when you enter major airframe and buffet effects. :(

Keep testing and see if you can find addition information about the crash.

Thanks, I'll keep testing. I've tried using FEdit to minimize the actual forces it applies to the joystick when it calls the .ffe effects, but that hasn't solved it.

BoB seems to be set up so that when your aircraft crashes, it invokes the buffet and airframe .ffe effects simultaneously and continously, so your stick is thrashing about like a mad thing until you press ALT-X. I don't know precisely why but I think this is what's causing my problem.

Hypothetically, one solution might be to modify the game's files so that it stops invoking them after, say, 5 seconds? There must be a command somewhere in the code that dictates the duration of a particular force feedback effect. It would be more realistic in any case: if your plane is scattered in a thousand pieces over the fair fields of southern England then you are unlikely still to be getting haptic input from the yoke.

Does anyone know which files control this, and where they might be found? I'll try anything. Thanks again.

EDIT: I have just located the No_Spinning_Death variable. I'll report back ...
