Will BOB 2 run on my system and how fast?

Post by yggie »

Hello everybody,

I´m looking for a nice WWII flight sim. I was used to play IL 2 FB some time and liked it very much. Last week I tried the demo of Wings of Prey the stunning grafics really overwhelmed me, but gameplay seems to be a little bit too much arcade. It went all smooth on my rig. IL2 CoD seems a little buggy and I think it won´t run on my system in a playable way. Upgrading my computer isn´t possible for some time, as I am husband an father of 2 children in apprenticeship....

However, while searching for information on wings of prey I came across BOB 2 Wings of Victory and was wondering- what do you think about my sys:

Phenom 9650 Quad Core
4 GB RAm
ATI HD 3650 512 MB
Screen 1440 x 900

Maybe some question on playing this sim:

are there Luftwaffe campaigns included? Is there an Online community (MP-matches) alife? Is the sim being moded?

Please apologize my english, as I am from germany.

Your PC should run BOBII on high settings with good performance, IMHO. Here is a link on BOBII performance that may help you:

BOBII has a dynamic campaign (both Commander and Single Player) where you can play either the LUF or RAF. It simulates each day of the BOB.

BOBII has a MP but it is not ready for players and may never be ready unless the BDG gets some MP coding skills. Here is a link that talks about how BOBII is developed and maintained:

http://a2asimulations.com/forum/viewtop ... =48&t=9483

BOBII continues to be developed (we are currently on version 2.11 and we are planning the 2.12 release). Here is the link where you can download version 2.11:

http://a2asimulations.com/forum/viewtop ... 10&t=21865

If you need additional information just read the sticky threads or download the User Manual here:

Thank you very much for your reply Buddye.

So right now I am looking where to get this game from. As I see actually in germany there is only one shop offering the 2005 in-box version of BOB2.
Is there any difference to the download version? I.e. printed manual or maps?

If not so, I´d prefer the download version. Is it possible to get this in germany via A2A and paypal?

You can upgrade to BOBII version 2.11 using either the download version (2.06) or the 2005 Box version (2.01). The BOBII upgrades are free to all owners of any version of BOBII.

All information in the 2005 box version (you get a CD and a small User Manual) has been updated and expanded in the BOBII 2.10 User Manual so the BOX version has no advanages IMHO.

You can purchase the download version (2.06) fromm A2A here:

Thank you again Buddye!
Just bought it online and right now I´m downloading BOB II.

Let´s hope all will work fine and I can "handle" the sim :)

First of all, from installation and installing patch 2.11 I could take directly to the skies. There´s not been a single problem.

Then I watched the graphics..really ugly. My first thought "doesn´t even reach 1998 EAW standards".
The textures of my Bf-109 were very chunky (?) cockpit as well as exterior.
Ok, got into the GFX settings and played with my ATI Catalyst Control center. While trying so, I awarded myself the Ritterkreuz, when I developed the german secret stealth fighter: All the plane got transparent.
But I could recognize the textures where fine. When I switched off AAA (Adaptive Anti-Aliasing) the plane looked substantial again with all textures fine. Really beautiful.
I set resolution to 1440 x 900 3d as well as desktop, which is the recommended resolution of my screen. (Enable "using desktop mode" always made the sim start at 640x480 (very nice, I felt like 1994).)

So now I got it working with nice textures and a good rate of fps. I really enjoy the look of the planes! Very good!

There´s just one problem that occurs in whatever setting I do in the options´menu (and I tried almost every possible way), lower settings (like horizon distance low) didn't change much:

Whenever I make a tight turn (doesn´t matter what plane I use), the environment seems to move step by step. It' s a little difficult to explain, it doesn´t look like a decrease of fps. It´s just like the motion advances then slows down and then accelerates again to regain lost time (like jumping into and out of jelly *g*).
I´ll check the fps when I´m back home. This all tested in the take-off training without any airtraffic.

I hope you understand what I try to say. Excuse my english.

:) Your English is excellent ,no problems with that.
When you say turn is it a normal turn or is it a spin.If you have spun the plane or are wounded /dead that can give you some graphics similar to the one you are describing.
If however it is a controlled turn then something isn't quite right.
Hopefully someone with more experience will be able to advise. :)

No spin and no injuriues. Just a simple controlled tight turn.

This is from another player you might want to check it:

"hi everyone!

new to this forum but it has been extremely productive! i too was suffering from the OP's issue but i can confirm that anyone suffering from the phantom aircraft/ground objects/cockpits can fix this by disabling the adaptive antialiasing in the catalyst control center :D

im running on a sempron 145, ecs mcp61m-m3 mobo, radeon 4850 512mb gfx, 2x2gb pny ddr3, win7 ultimate 64bit and all is well.

would just like to say a big thanx to all at the bdg for making this sim above and beyond its original incarnation - i love il-2 but immersion-wise and for atmosphere, this is so much better.

cheers everyone "

Hi Buddye! Thanks, but this I already fixes the phantom aircraft problem
When I switched off AAA (Adaptive Anti-Aliasing) the plane looked substantial again with all textures fine.
The problem now is the low fps rate. In 1440 x 900 which is the recommended resoltuion of my screen I actually get down to 3 fps.

I´ll make some testing today and will give you the settings of my ati catalyst control center as well as the settings in game together with the fps.
Anything else needed?

Just a question: the multiskin mod should not affect the take-off lessons withjout airtraffic, right? (only when there are some planes in the air?)

Ok, I went on playing with my settings. I changed settings in the ATI Catalyst Control center, the bdg.txt and the game options.
First setup and ongoing I noted the changes I made with the fraps recordes in game (shift+f)
Test environment was instant action, dogfight, RAF advantage, me flying a Bf-109.

First setup:

1.

ATI Catalyst Control Center:

AA 2x
AAA off
AI disabled
MipMap 3/4 quality
Vsync off

changes to Bdg.txt:

Auto Gen: OFF
Multiskin disable
Landscape 1024

BOB2 options:

1440x900x32 60Hz
Ground shading OFF
Item shading ON
Mirror OFF
Water LOW
Weather LOW
AF 2x
Smoke ON
Texture High
Routes ON
AC shadow ON
Item shadow OFF
Horizon distance LOW
Object quality high
Ground density Minimum
Prticle density LOW

FPS (shift+f):
Min: 10
Max: 200
Avr: 87

-----------------------------------------------
changes in 2.test:
1.
AA 2x (Temporary Anti Alias =2xAA2)
AI enabled
MipMap 4/4 quality

FPS (shift+f):
Min: 16
Max: 250
Avg: 100

-----------------------------------------------
changes 3rd test:

+vsync enable

MIN 14
MAX 130
AVG 87

--------------------------------------
4th:

vsync off
Multiskin ENABLE

MIN 15
MAX 143
AVG 78

-----------------------------------------
5th:

water high

MIN 9
MAX 150
AVG 78
(but seems much slower than in the other tries...more stuttering)
-------------------------------------
6th:
WATER Low
bdg.txt LANDSCAPE=2048
mipmap 3/4

MIN 7
MAX 125
AVG 74

Landscape seems to creep step by step from time to time.
---------------------------------------
last try:

Landscape 1024 again
Texture Maximum
Object detail Maximum
Particle density medium

MIN 14
MAX 125
AVG 73

Multiskin doesn´t seem to affect my system much. When I disabled multiskin in addition to the last try there was only minimum fps increase: MIN 14, MAX 200, AV 77

What do you think about these fps?
shouldn´t my system allow higher settings?

Re: Will BOB 2 run on my system and how fast?

Post by Buddye »

Your FPS look good to me so just setup on what you like.

The real test is in the Historic Missions with over 200 A/C.

It looks like you are learning how to tune BOBII to you PC environment.

Enjoy the game and start playing some Instant Action missions.

Yes I hope I will learn. It´s not like in the other games to just install and run. I´m rather testing than playing *g*. Still didn´t connect my Logitech Wingman extreme, as I'm steering by keyboard... and even managed to damage a spitfire (but also been shot down quite often...). Some more points:

1. What I really do not like is that I have to play with low quality water. This really looks extremely ugly. High quality water makes the environment kind of "jumping" like I tried to explain in my first posting. Is there any tweak to get something like "medium water quality"?

2. I think I´ve got to play some more with the settings. Maybe I should check the resolution. From 1440x900 the next steps down (regarding the aspect-ratio) would be 1280x800 and 1152x720.
Is reduction of resolution better for gaining performance or rather switch AA off? Or lets ask different is it better to play a higher res without AA or some lower res with AA on?

AF, as far as I´ve read doesn´t affect performance much.

3. When I run BOBII in compatibility mode "disable desktop...." the mouse-pointer doesn´t appear in the 3d game. Thats good, But: now I can´t see the movies anymore (like the ones in Instant action menu).

4.)
Well, I guess I just have to try out.

(who gives me a nice gaming pc? :p)

kind regards,

Adrian

You should not play with low water. Set to high. Remember you FSP are only needed to be in the Mid 25-35 and most higher FPS are wasted.

Keep AA and AF on low numbers as they will eat performance.
Resolution is not a big deal so set resolution to your taste

Do not run in compatibility mode. You will need to apply the following:

Note6: Windows Vista and Window 7 users. All Vista and Windows 7 users will need to apply the 'Vista/Windows 7 fix' to your desktop shortcut as a fresh 2.11 install will overwrite the previous shortcut.
Right click on shortcut and go to properties. Go to the compatibility tab. Check "disable desktop composition" and check the privilege level, run this program as an administrator.

Go ahead and study up on setting up your joy stick and hot keys as BOBII is a combat flight Sim that requires a joystick to be played well.

One more question:

I`ve got Windows Vistaâ„¢ Home Premium 64 Bit with dirext X 11 installed.

Would you recommend me to install also the latest dirext x 9c version? could this cause trouble with my sys?
Or won't this be needed as BOB 2 is already running.
