planning descent

Post by awash2002 »

At what distance do I need to begin my descent into my destination airport and what descent MP should I use?

It depends on how many feet you'll need to decent..
If you are cruising at 10000ft and your arrival airport is at 500 feet MSL, youl have to loose around 8500 feet to get to pattern/circuit altitude. If your ground speed is 150kts, you are going 2,5nm per minut so if you are decending at 500ft/min, you are traveling 42,5nm in the decent.
so...

Decent needed 8500
Decent ft per minut 500
Minuts to decent:
8500/500=17 minuts

Ground speed 150kts
150/60=2.5

Distance before descending:
17x2,5=42,5nm
I think it is difficult to maintain a certain ground speed during a decent, but I'll normally start my decent according to these calculations. I'd typically ad a few NM, to make sure I have time to slow down, if my ground gets to high during the decent.

I Hope this makes sence. BTW, Im not a real world pilot, A2A certificate only;-)
Kind Regards
Tomas
