Connie CTDs in P3Dv4

Post by Yoda »

The Connie crashes after clicking OK in the selection window.

I've made sure to install the latest DirectX as part of the installation process.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled twice.

Would be grateful for any suggestions.

Hello,

since no one else is reporting this it is a system issue or something relating to something else installed. Can you check your event viewer when the crash occur to check what it is that is crashing,

Also what is your default flight?

And to check you are using the P3Dv4 constellation software, not the P3Dv3 or earlier version.

thanks,
Lewis

Thanks for the help, Lewis.

I agree that this seems like a local issue. I should mention that I am running v4 HF1.

The System Event Log shows 37 of these: The IO operation at logical block address 0x0 for Disk 2 (PDO name: \Device\00000060) was retried.

The TechNet Wiki has nothing for that warning.

My default flight is the unmodified Prepar3D v4 default, with the F-22 on RWY 19 at Eglin AFB, engines running. I've been shutting engines down and powering off the battery before selecting any other aircraft. Other aircraft seem to work fine, including the A2A T-6, C182, Cherokee and C172.

Yes, I am using the P3Dv4 Connie software. I had that thought, too.

That error indicates a potential issue with the drive itself or the controller. I would ensure you have a backup of everything you care about on that machine before doing anything else.

After backing up important files, I would suggest scanning the drive for errors, it may just be a bad block. The error has caused your sim installation to get corrupted as it can no longer read something that it requires from the drive. A repair if such an option is available or a reinstall of the sim is likely.

I ran CHKDSK and came back with no errors. Since then, I've done more research, and yes, it does indicate a potential disk problem... I suspect the controller, since the disk itself checks out. I found several instances where people reseated their SATA cable and that cleared the problem.

It's interesting that the only two symptoms are the crashing Connie and the event log warning I mentioned above.

In any case, thanks for the help.

Let me make this a less isolated incident; I have this too. Event log sais nothing out of the ordinary, except that the application hangs for unknown reason:

Code: Select all

- EventData

   Prepar3D.exe
   4.0.28.21686
   11c0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Binary data:

0010: 00 00 ..

Things I have already excluded:

- the fact that I have an exe.xml in my AppData\Roaming\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4 folder, for my Saitek panels.
- the fact that I have a SimConnect.xml in my AppData\Roaming\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4 for my FSE client.
- I copied the aircraft.cfg from v3 to v4. No joy.

I have re-installed the plane in V3 too, to see if it runs there, and it does.

How are you loading the aircraft, what is your default flight is it something other than a default flight, do you have add-ons that are not created specially for P3Dv4 using the P3Dv4 SDK running?

I have no addons that are not v4 approved. Basicly some Carenado planes and ORBX regions. I have tried the TWA and BOAC, I have tried the default airport as well as YMMB and even some desolate place in Brazil as I figured there would be less to load (and there is no ORBX active there). I have tried several times of the day/night.

Hello,

can you let us know what anti-virus/malware you are running? Have you tried exempting P3D from it to make sure its not causing any issues?

thanks,

The only thing I have is (standard) windows Defender. I will fiddle with it a bit, but I doubt that's the issue...

Ahh, in that case yes that could be the issue. There is an exemption that can be made if using defender.

No, it wasn't the windows defender. What it was (and I should have done it from the 1st day of installing  ) is that I have set my 'Lockheed Martin' folder to 'everyone - full control' in the security tab.

Thanks for the help ! :D

Well, by default your Program Files folder is protected, but some P3D addons need to be able to write. On my v3 folder I just added users - full control, on my v4 folder I have set everyone - full control. I'm sure it can be set more strict but I'm not scared of hackers or viruses (viria? :?: ).

So you just right-click the folder, go to the security tab, click edit, then add, advanced, 'find now' wich will show a list and there you can select users/everyone/whatnot. As for the permissions themselves I think read and write could be sufficient, I just took the fast way and gave 'full control'.

For me, it turned out that the Prepar3D v4 Add-ons folder was set to "read only". I deselected "read only" and the Connie came right up.

Thanks for the ideas, everyone!
