They planted advertizing for ciggies in everything back then. Apparently however even at his lowest ebb when in serious debt Audie Murphy refused to do them knowing what effect that'd have on impressionable youths.

That's definitely a paid placement. Arthur Godfrey, a major radio and TV personality back in the day, was sponsored by Chesterfield - until he wasn't.
