Great flight and then OOPs.....
Great flight and then OOPs.....
Had a really nice flight this afternoon from KARR to KBDQ, ILS ro 31, lined up on the ILS, contact PF3 Tower, got landing clearance, had approach speed nailed, right on the glide slope and noticed that I was not getting altitude call outs from the co pilot as I went below 500 feet. When I was at 50 feet, and just starting to flare I hear "brace yourself"... I wonder why someone said that, since landing looked like it was going to be a greaser. Then I looked at the three gear down lights which were off>>> You should have heard the passengers whining and complaining.......

Just tell 'em you thought you were going too fast.

I figured out what happened, after thinking about it. I remember distinctly lowering the gear on approach to slow down, and on my throttle quadrant I have my gear switch and next to it my prop speed switches. When I increased the prop speed to 2500, I must have accidently hit the gear switch for the second time , which retracted the gear. Will check on the green lights on short final next time.AviationAtWar wrote:Just tell 'em you thought you were going too fast.

I haven't done this in the Connie but I did do this in the B-17 once. She required four new engines to get her airborne again. In the 17 your co-pilot will complain about everything you do that is not quite right, i.e. rough landing, too cold, too hot, filters off, etc but will sit quietly by as you belly land her.
I hope I don't belly land the Connie. This would be bad for glowing reputation and career

Old sayin' on gear ups, There those who have and there are those who will. at 70 years of age flying a ''straight leg'' is just one less thing to stay on top of, LOL

There's a reason the only checklist I make myself do religiously is the landing checklist.
