Barrel roll before landing

Post by acebrando »

The last 2 times that I have flown the Comanche it has performed a 180 degree barrel roll on me at about 200' AGL when landing. It happens just shy of the fence. My hands are on the controls with the autopilot turned off.

When it rolls it is not a gentle occurrence. It happens in about 3 seconds. One moment I am looking at the numbers and then all of a sudden the world is upside down looking at trees.

The wind conditions on both landings were so calm that they were practically a breeze, not a strong wind component or variable winds +/- 10 kts.

I do use AS2016 as my wx engine.

Any ideas?

Make sure the "enhanced turbulence" setting is turned OFF in AS16.

Yes, either that and/or the wake turbulence effect in AS16 are probably the culprit here.

So since this only happens with the Comanche, I have to turn both of those settings in AS2016 off every time I fly the Comanche?

"Enhanced turbulence" should be unticked, yes. This setting can cause issues with add-on aircraft with advanced flight models, which I suspect is why it's disabled by default.

The wake turbulence simulation is obviously dependent on the proximity of AI traffic. Were there any AI landings prior to your approach for the cases in question?

Thanks,
Nick

I have never flown the Comanche with air traffic. Neither AI or VATSIM.

Then chances are it's just the As2016 "enhanced turbulence" setting. Unless the 'barrel roll' coincides with you extending the flaps, and one of them happens to be jammed...

Dumb question: Why has this only happened with the Comanche?

You can actually fly through your own wake in ASN and it causes lots of control issues. Also if you have a problem with the aircraft that can be detected during the walk around, it might lead to a problem with handing when flaps are deployed.

Interesting. On all of my airplanes, including airliners, I always do a pre-flight walk-around.

The second "barrel roll" happened during pattern flying. Go arounds, touch and gos, and full stop landings. The "barrel roll" occured during my last pattern shooting for a full stop landing. The airplane handled just fine during go arounds.

There are other offerings besides A2A with a walk around?

Are you doing the featured walk around with your Comanche using shift - 8 to actually perform the full walk around with checks. I'd suspect weather issue here, but for sure it could easily be flap issue.

For the Comanche I do the A2A walkaround where I check if there is H20 in the fuel, etc.

The Comanche (and other A2A Accusim products, and some other developers' products) doesn't play nice with the "enhanced turbulence" feature because they both make use of SimConnect functions - when both are in use at the same time, unpredictable things happen. I wouldn't even worry about turning enhanced turbulence back on, the effect is a bit odd and unrealistic IMO anyway. You will still get plenty of rockin' and rollin' turbulence without it.

Interesting. I didn't know this info.

Thanks!
