Am I missing something, as quite often the gear is not being lowered when I hit "G".
I am getting a lot pf sparks on landing !

Yes, possibly - there's a three way gear position lever in the Comanche. By default, pressing "G" toggles between UP, OFF and DOWN so you'll need to press "G" twice to move from UP to DOWN and vice-versa. Don't forget to check for the green gear position indicator light before landing too. (Think of it as the 'anti-spark system confirmation light' if you like...)
