Carb icing?

Post by bkmetz2x205 »

I think I've encountered carb icing recently. Once on the ground. I detected it on the run-up when I applied carb heat. The other two times were while in cruise flight.

All I can say is awesome!

Any time you see clouds or precip, you need to keep a "weather eye" on the MP gauge. The [H] key is your friend.

Carb icing does not require visible precipitation. As long as there is a sufficient amount of water vapor in the air, there is a risk of carb icing. This means temps of 60-70F are very high risk.

And don't forget, all of our icing simulated including the rate of ice buildup was measured in the actual airplane.

Add in something like AS and it's amazing.
Last week when the temps dipped into the 40s here in Los Angeles I watched power just fade as I climbed.

Leaned the fuel a bit for the cylinder heads and a touch of carb heat and I was fine.

Then I took the C 182 up - "Where is the damned carb heat?" Oh yeah..."

I had it at PAJN a couple months back. Taxied to RWY 8 and all of the sudden had literally no power to even move lol. Brought in some heat and eventually got moving.
