Is it legal to put big reg numbers on the bottom of the wing in the US? Agree with Lewis, I think they look cool.

Interesting question. I've just had a rummage around the internet and nowhere can I find a regulation one way or the other. From what I gather there is not a requirement to have an underwing registration, so who would put one there if they weren't made to?

They do look better from a paint point of view though.

When I started flying N6852P, it only had the small registration numbers on the tail. Someone rented it for a trip to Mexico and they were required to put the larger ID numbers on.

If someone would like to paint this scheme, you don't have to put the large ID numbers on, they kind of spoil the scheme....I won't tell the FAA if you won't

Hey Ron,

In Germany the regulations (and we have a lot of them  ) say that on aircraft below 5.700kg MTOW there needs to a registration under the left wing with letters of at least 30cm height and it needs to be good contrast to the paint of the wing.

You're right. We wouldn't put it there if we weren't made to

Ordinarily, I do not think it is (legal). Here, the FARs govern that stuff... specifically FAR Part 45 - Identification and Registration Marking.

I was having a look at the Advisory Circular (AC 45-2D) on this - wrt "Antique aircraft":

You may display the category symbol between the nationality designation and the registration number.(e.g. the "C" for Standard - like on a Cub) You may not display any other mark beginning with the nationality designation elsewhere on the aircraft. Antique aircraft registered as N-numbered aircraft may display markings as they were applied at the time of initial certification. (so I think this is why you can see them on the wing - again using the example of a Cub.)

If I really wanted to do that, my first call would be to the local FSDO. To me, registration marks on the wing are "odd," as in, it is not normally seen, except on these older aircraft.

Part 45 again - required when crossing an ADIZ (Air Defense Identification Zone). And the reg says they can be temporary... so I believe (black) tape would be perfectly legal. No need to call the FAA. :P

I've done some research on this last year. In the EU and Britain, it is a legal requirement to have the rego under the wing. Same in Australia and NZ. Most other countries follow this except the US.

Hope this helps.
