Zebra Stripes on the 182 or 172

Post by Mithras »

Are there any 'safari' repaints of the 182 (or 172) does anyone know? I found a a zebra stripe repaint for Just Flight's 152, but f course I don't fly that plane anymore. :)

The reason I ask is because I fly around Kenya and Tanzania, where FTX Global does a brilliant job with textures, I was on safari there a couple of years and travelled about in an ATR72 as well as a DH-6. I've used Instant Scenery to turn those dusty empty strips into places I recognise.

At Seronera in Tazania, on the Serengeti, a visitor centre had a scale model of a Dornnier 27 in zebra stripes hanging down from the ceiling. The original plane had belonged to German veterinarian Bernard Grzimek. He and his son, Michael landed in Serengeti after flying 4,000 miles from Frankfurt in their Dornier 27 bush aircraft. There was no mistaking their aircraft; it looked like a gigantic zebra with black and white stripes across its entire length. Bernard and Michael had come out to study migration patterns in the Serengeti and demonstrate that the proposed culls would be disastrous for the Serengeti ecosystem

The 182 is great in this environment, although flying at such high altitudes (6-7,000 feet QNH) is tricky, starting up with the mixture lean is needed or she won't start at all!

Extra information: Michael, his son, was a cinematographer And he unfortunately died on-location during the filming of a documentary. The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1959. On January 10 1959 the plane (Dornier Do 27) piloted by Michael collided with a vulture and he lost control over it - he was killed.

Its about a "competitor", but I hope that is ok ...

If you "Mithras" are interested in flying that famous plane DO 27 from the picture above, you should consider the Aerosoft Do 27:

Yes, it is a very old addon (ported from FS9 back then) but it works in FSX and P3D also very well. It was frame-hog in earlier times, but with current PC systems, no problem. I still fly her some times some days, and it is a pleasure. For it's age its a bit expensive ...

But I would consider it as the first "accusim plane" ever made (sorry A2A ;) )
Full engine modelling etc.

You really should have a look ... oh and yes, Zebra paint included

The Dornier is an awesome plane. I am throwing around some zebra vibes on the 172 to see where I get. If successful I will do the 182 as well. It has been a while since painting these two, so may take a little bit.

That's quite ok ebo, I've got two other projects currently going and can only devote a little time here and there. Have to keep the little lady happy. If you get one done then so be it as I will download and enjoy your artwork.

Ah, thanks! I did know of the Aerosoft Do27, but did read it was a bit tough on fps in FSX - and, well, you know how it is - I can't get enough of A2A realism...

Aerosoft do produce African Adventures (I think it is called) with detailed custom airstrips in N. Kenya - a fab add-on that I have flown into alot.

I hope you guys complete those stripey repaints ;)

Hi Ebo.
Any chance of having a copy of the zebra for the Do27?
Cheers Chris
