Cowl Flaps

Post by n421nj »

I see in the check lists that cowl flaps are set to open for take off. I'm guessing that unlike the b377, B17 and p47 the c182 can have cowl flaps open 100% without being damaged?

Yes that's right.

Why do we want cowl flaps to be opened before engine startup? It seems to be logical to close them for the engine to warm up.

Maybe this is the fundamental reason:

Correct - no need to cook your cylinder heads while waiting for the oil to warm up...

There is usually a reason. My guess would be hot spots could develop, plus you could get distracted and forget they are closed. The engine warms up fast enough. I look for 165 deg min before runup. Takes a few min at most.

I would also think that an engine fire during start might be better contained with the cowl flaps opened.

The general reason is to purge the engine of any fumes before start
by allowing airflow. It also helps prevent temperature variation during engine start and initial idle.
