Lewis - Fresh Install FSX Gold Edition - 180 still CTD

Post by mikec »

Hi Lewis.

Did a fresh install of FSX Gold edition early this morning (including Acceleration); started FSX and played around for a couple of minutes. Installed the Cherokee, updated it to 2.03, rebooted and then ran FSX again. Worked fine until the 180 was selected where it crashed to the desktop.

The difference between the previous CTD and this is that it no longer comes up with an error message about FSX crashing and offering the option to debug. Also, in the Windows App log, there is not a reference to any dll failures however, there is an error saying "The description for Event ID 10 from source Microsoft-Windows-WMI cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer." (Whatever that means). I have posted the rest of the error below.

SFC /scannow returns no errors with the Windows system.

Question: The Gold edition of FSX/Acceleration - I understand that it is not necessary to install SP1 or 2 for FSX. Is that correct?I didn't install either service pack.

Any suggestions?

Thx

App event log error:

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

//./root/CIMV2
SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99
0x80041003

Thx
Mike

Hello,

Have you run this;
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download ... aspx?id=35

And also do you have any speakers or headphones plugged into your Computer when you are trying to load the sim?

thanks,
Lewis

Yes. I did run the web update for DX. I also have a set of logitech speakers plugged in as well as a Cooler Master Sirrus 5.1 headset. Do you want me unplug the latter and remove the drivers?

Thx

Hi Lewis - unplugged the headphones and removed the driver. Still CTD.

Windows error log is once again reporting terrain.dll failure and interestingly, it's reporting the old 0xc0000005 error which used to have to do with video (I think).

Your thoughts??

Faulting application name: fsx.exe, version: 10.0.61637.0, time stamp: 0x46fadb14
Faulting module name: terrain.dll, version: 10.0.61637.0, time stamp: 0x46fadb59
Exception code: 0xc0000005

terrain.dll is not something we touch so it sounds like a fsx crash but lets get this sorted for you. Is this just a plain FSX install. FSX SP1-SP2 and the Cherokee?

thanks,

The install is nothing more than FSX gold edition - Plain FSX + Acceleration. My understanding is that I should NOT install SP1 or 2 if installing Acceleration. can you confirm that - i.e. ignore SP 1 & 2.

Thx

Hello,

Yes you can ignore SP1 and 2 is you have acceleration.

When you reinstalled FSX did you delete all remaining files from the previous installation and restart your computer?

thanks,

Hey Mike did you also delete all the hidden type files so those hidden away under my documents etc?

Heres something interesting on the terrain.dll crash;
http://forum.avsim.net/topic/292844-ter ... ashes-fsx/

Could you be trying to push your system too hard? Maybe overzealous graphics card AA, AF etc settings?

thanks,

Hi Lewis.

I read the thread. I don't BSOD, only CTD which would indicate it's not overstressed. This system is slightly overclocked (need to to get frame rates with everything elses that's installed ;-) ) so I'll keep that in mind.

I just did a repair install of win7 as sfc was reporting a couple of problems it couldn't fix. As soon as I get everything back up and running I'll give it another try. If it fails to install this time around, I'll wind back the clock speed to see if that helps however, all of the other components on the system and in FSX did run well on the system as it was previously configured.

I flew a 180 quite a lot back in the mid 60's so was looking forward to playing around with it in FSX. A2A is the only producer of the model I am aware of. ORBX just released the Victa Airtour which is the plane I learned to fly in back in '62 so there are two of the old "fun buggies" out now.

I'll post back to this thread once I get everything going again - probably Sunday/Monday.

Thanks for your help.
Mike

Hi Lewis.

Even after a repair install of win7 and reinstall of FSX I still am getting a CTD.

After the reinstall, turned all sliders to minimum and have tried winding the OC back to normal however, no difference. The Windows Event Log continues to report a failure of terrain.dll.

Can you do me a favor? Check the date/time stamp of your terrain.dll and also the size. After reinstalling FSX, the terrain.dll that gets installed with the vanilla FSX is 750K in size and has a date/time stamp of 09-Sep-06 8:15PM.

After installing acceleration, the date/time stamp is 26-Sep-07 and the size is 885K.

Not sure what to do; I don't think this product is going to run on this machine.

Thx
Mike

Hey mike,

Are all your drivers up to date, including graphics and sound?

Thanks,
Lewis

Definitely. After the repair install, made sure all drivers were current. Ran the web update for DirectX; Unplugged the USB headset and removed the Sirrus drivers. Flushed out the registry for any entries having anything to do with FSX/Flight Simulator/etc., Orbx/FTX or REX; deleted all directories associated with any of the three. Positive none existed.

One thing that did happen was when the 180 was selected, this time it started to load. Tried selecting the FSX Cessna and not using full screen; that got it a little further however it still crashed.

I don't see this as a problem with the product, rather it has something to do with my system. Not sure what though as all of the other products work fine. It may have something to do with software or hardware although I have never seen it in the past.

The A2A 337/"Captain of the Ship" runs just fine.

This system has Visual Studio 2010, Office 2010, VFP9, WAMP and Wordpress installed on it. FSX is installed on its own SSD; REX is installed on its own SSD.

If you come up with any ideas, please let know. For what it may be worth, I can go into debug and send the point where the thing is crashing in fsx (assuming I can still get to it after these clean installs).

Thx
Mike
