(From the manual/pilot notes)
Is that just for interest or is there a similar mechanism to raising the gear on the MkI Spitfire?
Also, regarding turning the crew members on: Is that just a visual thing or does it affect something else?
Thank you.
Landing gear takes 160 turns to raise and lower
Re: Landing gear takes 160 turns to raise and lower
its a manual hand crank with chains (like the f4f wildcat) that the pilot/crew member had to turn, its not automatic and takes a while to fully raise/lower the gear
As to the crew, its just visual

Thanks for the reply Stiz. Good job on the Anson.
I just tried it. Thanks for the explanation of how they'd have used it on the actual plane.
The Spitfire required the lever moving 15 times if I remember correctly, so I wasn't looking forward to turning a crank 160 times
In this case you just have to wait for it to finish. It takes a loooong time for the gear to come up, and probably also to go down. I guess the gear will need putting down early.
Thanks again

Yes, the Anson was almost a fixed gear aircraft with the speed it takes to get the wheels up. Stiz during development found that many crews would simply keep the gear down during the shorter flights.

Ah yes, that was referenced in the "Climb" checklist. That explains it nowLewis - A2A wrote:Yes, the Anson was almost a fixed gear aircraft with the speed it takes to get the wheels up. Stiz during development found that many crews would simply keep the gear down during the shorter flights.

And I thought pumping hydraulic levers was a pain... Did Lucas and Stiz actually simulate 160 turns of the wheel?

You have no idea how many people sat in chairs around the planet pumping their hand round in circles roughly the size of an Anson gear crank handle to estimate the time required.
