Re: hardware and upgrades needed to use C172 properly,
Hello Norm - welcome to the A2A forums.
The main thing to clarify is that the C172 is an add-on package for a base simulator. There are currently two versions available: one is for Microsoft Flight Simulator X (which is currently available on Steam) and the other is for Lockheed Martin's Prepar3D.
If you could give us a little bit more info about which sim you own or plan to use, and the basic specs of your PC (for example the processor type and speed and the type of graphics card) it'll be easier for us to offer advice.
In terms of controllers, you should fine with the twist handle joystick you mention. The only other requirements are a keyboard and scroll wheel mouse.
Thanks,
Nick
