question: what would it take to conver to 172sp

Post by clmooring »

I love the 172r. but I was wondering what is required to convert this great add-on to a 172sp. Is it just some minor tweeks of engine perfomance and a new paint job? Or would it require far more work?

What engine performance tweaks are you speaking of?

I understand that the primary difference between the 172r and the 172sp is that the sp has more engine horse power (mayb a 6 cyl instead of a 4 cyl).

of course interior upgrades.

I think using the other propeller provided gives you similar preformance to the sp(extra 20hp) be it a louder engine noise, thought I am no expert.

Think the C172r 160Hp (C172sp 180Hp oh and leather seats  )

The 'R' and the 'S' have the same engine.. (this is covered pretty well in the developmental videos) ..

Most of these light, GA engines are capable of delivering quite a bit more HP than their ratings. If your were to put, say, the engine at hand (IO-360) on a dyno, and test it like an automobile engine, you'd probably find that the HP peaks at over 3000rpm. There are a couple of reasons they aren't set up to run at high RPM..

1)Duty cylce .. they wouldn't last as long

2)Typical GA props (+\- 6 feet) will see their blade-tips reach super-sonic speeds near 3000rpm and become very inefficient (and very loud)

A C177rg gets a 200HP rating out of an IO-360.. mainly due to the constant-speed prop. An old trick (that I'll deny), was for a pilot to get his high-performance endorsement (greater than 200HP) in a C177rg, by having the prop governor set up for a slightly higher RPM..

ANYway.. the 180HP comes from a prop that allows the engine to operate at the higher, 2700RPM

thanks for the feedback. Maybe one day a nice leather interior will show up. Until then, I will enthusiatically operating my 172R.

When you change the prop do the rpm range markings change
