Sounds like a good plan - seems your installation has been thoroughly 'borked' by something. Make sure you manually remove any files which are left over after running the various uninstallers, before you restart and begin reinstalling stuff.

Oh dear, hope you mention to your son that maybe in the future not installing an SDK and other things Though I think the install was probably good but its the uninstalling it thats caused you the issue.

Good luck with the reinstall and remember to manually delete all the left over files!
