Full throttle needed for startup?

Since the 5_9_16 update, can anybody do a manual start of the C172 with the throttle in any position other than full open?

My current procedure which is successful is this:
-Engine priming as per usual procedure.
-Mixture Idle Cutoff
-Throttle full open
-Ignition to Start
-Mixture Full Rich on startup
-Throttle reduce to 800-1000 RPM

Any throttle position other than fully open results in a failed start.

I have at least 200 hours in real fuel injected C172's, including dual given... but that has been more than 5 years ago... so I am probably rusty. I'm curious to see if anybody can start it with the throttle cracked, or if this is just bad technique on my part.

Just went to a flight yesterday and had no issues on startup. It sounds to me like your engine is flooded if you have to use full throttle to get it started.

I had that same problem last year. Turned out to be the ambient temperatures. It was very warm outside (close to 100F) which required a lot less priming. What are your ambient temps? Just try to advance the mixture only for one or two seconds while priming. That's what fixed it for me.

Yes I'd wager a flooded engine. You can always check too if having issues by opening the maint hanger and then going to the inspect engine panel and it will let you know if the engine is flooded or not. You can carry on trying to manually start/clear, wait for it to clear a bit or use the button int he maint hangar panel mentioned to clear the issue right away.

Thank you guys for the advice, it sounds plausable. I am on a trip right now and will have to try it when I get back.

Hi all,

Just want to let you know this was indeed the cause. I just started the engine with a cracked throttle at 80F. I primed only enough to move the FF needle.

I'm glad it helped. Getting the starting procedure right every time can be a little difficult. But once you get some practice it'll be a piece of cake :wink:
