How difficult would it be to integrate the HSI from the 182 into the 172?
More of a curiosity question, really.

To tell you the truth, I have no idea! Just from a realism standpoint however, I think you are better off with the DG. You won't really find an HSI on a 172 ( that is unless it has a G10000), and from a training standpoint, it is a lot better practice having to cross reference the VOR and DG. Have a great weekend!

There was a limited "Millennium Edition" series of Skyhawks which featured special options, and if my recall is correct, the KCS-55 course system together with the KI-525 HSI indicator, seen in the A2A C182, was one of them. If you look at airliners.net, for example, you can find Skyhawks with KI-525, so this request is not totally unrealistic.

Re: HSI in the 172?
Hello,
its not possible to move the gauge. As noted its not entirely realistic to have such a guage in a mid 90's 172R variant.
thanks,
Lewis

Re: HSI in the 172?
I regularly fly a 172 with HSI installed, so it's not entirely unrealistic to have it, at least not more than a 182. For the curious: N787SP (it is a 172S, not 172R).

Re: HSI in the 172?
Yeah, we definitely have a 172S with an HSI at my club as well. Mind you, of the fie 172s we have, it's the only one without a G1000... so we're pretty spoiled regardless.
Thanks for the answer though! Appreciate it!

What HSIs are you having on your airplanes? The KI-525A is factory-standard equipment on some individual 172 planes within certain s/n-ranges it seems (though from a couple of hundreds of frames on from N7274H that I think was the A2A's 'prototype') - something else than that would indicate an aftermarket mod or an STC.

Yes the standard R never shipped with them, the later S models did and as noted they were also the true start of the glass making its mark in the 172 series. The S model is the second model in the 90's reboot after 172 production stopped, the first being the R.

Re: HSI in the 172?
Not sure, according to Cessna's publications, the HSI has been available for s/n 80984 and on. That would indicate an R model, as those are serialized as 17280001→ while S model is serialized as 172S8001→. These are sometimes abbreviated as 80001 (R model) vs 08001 (S model), apparently if alphabetical characters are not wanted to get included.
This of course doesn't mean that any shipped with one, nor do I know how many R models were actually produced before the production switched to S model. For all I know, this could just apply to few last R frames. The Cessna lineups are a bit difficult sometimes.

Yes if you have the money you could get all sorts out the factory but as standard she never shipped with one.
