cruise EGT

Post by awash2002 »

I am loving the 172 but I also use the cruise power setting tables to set cruise but I'm going to tomorrow morning take it up to 10,000 and just see just how hot I can get the EGT's my target is to get them up to 1520 which is where I run my Navajo at but that is TIT is 1520

What's your goal trying to accomplish that? In the real plane you would even know how high the EGT is because you don't have the tooltips.

So I'm just wandering what your trying to find out/proof?

Awash,

Don't even bother comparing EGT (or any engine parameters) to a non-Accusim airplane. I don't want to sound harsh, but everything else out there, these numbers are virtually meaningless. Comparing will only cause confusion.

And of course, if you do manage to get it hot enough for long enough, you'll be able to practice your forced landing technique on the way back to... back to... well, ok, on the way down (because you won't be going back to where you started unless it's right under you or you decide to walk)

Like the others said though, to what end? In fact, they don't even have the same engine, so this makes zero sense to me I'm afraid.

Piper Navajo would make a hard comparison in reality too, because it is turbocharged (being powered by Lycoming TIO-540-A engines). In turbocharged airplanes one generally wants to avoid excessively hot EGTs, which is why their gauges have meaningful scales in degrees more often. In naturally aspirated engines there are no such limitations and therefore a lack of calibrated gauge is not an issue - a relative scale without figures does just fine!

True and from now on I'm gonna run the 172 20 LOP or at Peak EGT which should not go beyond 1500 at 2300 rpm

Why's that? That 1500 part? :)

That's the highest it would get if I did the leaning by ear but it rarely gets that it gets 1450 max

I think what Esa is trying to say is that the absolute values that you keep looking at are completely meaningless in a naturally aspirated engine! So forget looking at them! Just lean to peak of something a little rich of peak EGT (maybe like 50 -125F) just like the manual suggests. You can do that by to finding the peak and then just take to of the lines (sorry can't think of a more elegant word ) below it. That'll be 50F ROP.

But please forget the absolute values! :D

Yes - you could even go 'cold turkey' and just turn off the tooltips!
