Mishap with the 172= crazy low oil pressure

Post by RageShade1 »

so i was making a 3 hour trip from my local airport and about mid way thorough i set the autopilot and walked away for about 30min, big mistake, i was flying in hot weather and didnt notice the oil temp nearly pegging and the oil pressure dropping, needless to say, i trashed the crank bearings, after almost 1,500 hours it needs a rebuild :( Surprisingly, i managed to turn around and make it back to the airport, but it now has a dismal 15-17psi of oil pressure at idle and 39psi of oil pressure under power, it hasn't seized up yet so ill keep flying it until it does, at one point the pressure was so low the oil pressure indicator was flickering it got down to 11-12 psi when hot at idle lol, here is some pic's http://s1383.photobucket.com/user/ben_r ... iew=recent

That is exactly why I enjoy flying the A2A planes so much. Because it's like a real aircraft. You have to be careful and watch the gauges all the time. Not like with other addons where you can be AFK for 3h and all that happens is the fuel getting low.

I hope your engine will last a while after this adventure. And if not thankfully it won't cost a fortune to rebuild it

Take care

So far its still running ok, scares me to start it up now because it takes 6-7 seconds for the oil pressure to rise when u start it up lol O.o

Good to hear she's still running! If you don't mind keeping us posted here I would like to know the outcome of your experiment. :D

Will do, im doing a flight as we speak and im just able to maintain 75-80 knots, the engine wont rev past 1,700 rpm lol, i had to set the air temp to -50F to make it dense enough to maintain flight speed at that rpm haha, at 1,700 rpm shes got, 37-39 psi of oil pressure, but is still running smoothly and she just crossed the 1,500 hour mark :)

 good luck then! I hope you're in close proximity of an airport. Otherwise you might need more than just an engine rebuild

Hey, Rageshade1, try a ocean crossing in your C172. I bet you may get a big surprise. Bring a life vest and a life boat!

Keep the shiny side up and the dirty side down!
