Is that Cessna also a Popcorn maker two?
Is that Cessna also a Popcorn maker two?
Today before taxi I did the standard tests with the engine and when i switched the key to the Left Magneto, it was making the most "popcorn" popping sounds. It's quite nice to listen to but what's going there? What is the engine indicating? And why isn't there any popcorn being made
Re: Is that Cessna also a Popcorn maker two?
was the rpm bouncing around as your engine was popping?
If yes then your plugs are fouled. Just give it some high rpms for a few minutes. That will clean the plugs.

Yes, sounds like you fouled the plugs. Give her a good blast through on the throttle is normally enough to clear the plugs out.
thanks,

Re: Is that Cessna also a Popcorn maker two?
Had the same thing happen to me yesterday on my C172R. I flooded the engine during starting and fouled the plugs. When I did the mag check both the left and right sides dropped in RPM greater than 200 RPM and the RPMs were bouncing around all over the place. The engine was also sputtering and popping. I knew right away what I had done, so I increased the RPM to 1500 and leaned it out a bit. Occasionally I would re-check the mags until I finally got the proper drop in RPM during the check. It did take me a few minutes to accomplish de-fouling the plugs.

I have a question about this as well. It doesn't happen a lot for me, and, I'm embarrassed to say, I have just gone into the shop to replace the plugs instead of trying to clear them.Lewis - A2A wrote:Yes, sounds like you fouled the plugs. Do you do this on the mag that is poppin or on both?
Re: Is that Cessna also a Popcorn maker two?
On both, for otherwise you'd might not be able to generate enough heat in the chamber to 'burn off' the deposits on the plug and/or you may end up fouling the other set of plugs while cleaning the other. Main reason depends a bit on who you ask, but on both mags it is.crazac wrote:Do you do this on the mag that is poppin or on both?

Ah! Makes sense. Thanks Akar.AKar wrote:On both, for otherwise you'd might not be able to generate enough heat in the chamber to 'burn off' the deposits on the plug and/or you may end up fouling the other set of plugs while cleaning the other.
