2.13 Campaign bug?

Post by Boompus »

Hello

I'm doing a RAF SPC and many airfields in group 11 are already damaged or destroyed on July 20th :roll: Is this a bug?

Also my squadron 242 has moved to group 13 the next day...
AF of 242 undamaged.

Hi Boompus

I am currently doing an analysis of an RAF SPC and I am part way through posting my feedback on the Beta Forum in case it is of use to those great guys of the BDG with technical skills. I know that they are continually working on the campaign code as well as other aspects of BoB2 to try to improve it still further.

I have found the same sort of pattern of damage to RAF airfields which indicates that the raids on RAF airfields started much earlier in the SPC that I have been testing than in the historical battle. For the RAF, it seems that a tough job just got tougher. However, I am sure that you will prevail!!!

Cheers

Hi Boompus,

I am the coder responsible for the campaign. Been away a while.

In 2.11, the version when I first volunteered, there was no known way for the LW to win, without the player flying every mission and flying/shooting extremely well. I may be the only person who won the 2.11 LW campaign without ever flying. If you want an advanced class in frustration, try to win with LW in 2.11, and never frag in.

Since then, things have gotten better. Check the change logs for the release versions of 2.12 and 2.13. Ground target changes were in 2.13.

As for your observations, I believe you are correct. Here are my observations.
* ground targets are being damaged too easily, perhaps 20-25 too quickly for airfields (factory damage looks about right).
* LW AI isn't hitting non-Fighter Command fields which is most relevant if historical is selected for LW strategy. This would spread the damage around more.
* CRO rebuild rate on fighters may be low, will look at when get to the RAF AI.
* Lofty believes airfields are repairing too slow - perhaps. The LW didn't really concentrate on the fields for a long enough time to give us a feel for whether they could be put of out action and for how long. Also, real data on what was damaged, how much it was damaged, how it affected operations, and how quickly it could be repaired is limited. I do recall a general observation in Bungay's book that the organization responsible for airfield repairs got better/more effective as time passed. There is one aspect of fighter field damage I am confident of and that is the unexploded bombs that severely restricted flight ops on a least two fields for a time. The code doesn't model that, but it is something I was thinking of when I rewrote the ground target damage and repair code for 2.13.

Observations always welcome.

BTW, goals for 2.14 include,
* 2D air-to-air combat resolution rewrite
* LW Intel overhaul
* LW Raid AI overhaul
* RAF AI (Oh, recently found a huge bug in the RAF AI, limiting the number of squadrons sent up when a LW raid included detached escorts. Fixed)

Periodically, I'll post test campaign code on the general forum, to get more eyes looking at it, than just the BDG. If I can solve the 2D combat code problems, that code will be posted.
